INTELLIGENT
TRANSPORT SYSTEM
An Introduction
TR5101 - Puspita Dirgahayani
DEFINITION
There are many definitions of “intelligent transport system” or the
variants “intelligent transportation system” or “advanced transport
telematics”

The aim of using ITS should be to improve the links between the
infrastructure, the vehicles, and the users to make individual
components, modes, and the transport system as a whole work more
efficiently and effectively within the context of wider transport, urban
and regional development, economic, and environmental policy.

Taylor in Button and Hensher, 2001; page 461 – 475

TR5101 - Puspita Dirgahayani
DEFINITION
An evolving scientific and engineering discipline whose primary goal is
to minimize travel time of all travelers and merchandise while ensuring
safety, through fair distribution of available resources, especially:
 Under the scenario of increasing travel speeds
 A significantly large numbers of travelers
 A high demand for precise and timely information by travelers

A seamless and natural integration of different modes of

transportation: vehicular traffic, trains, cargo air transport, passenger
air transport, marine ferries, and others through asynchronous
distributed control and coordination algorithms, subject to social
norms, policies, and guidelines.
Ghosh and Lee, 2010
BENEFITS FROM ITS

TR5101 - Puspita Dirgahayani

APPLICATION
1) Better utilization of infrastructure;
2) Improved traffic flow;
3) Better service from public transport;
4) Enhanced safety;
5) Lower-cost freight transport; and
6) Reduced environmental impact.

Taylor in Button and Hensher, 2001; page 461 – 475

THE STRATEGIC VISION OF ITS
As the integrator of
transportation,
communications and
intermodalism on a regional
scale:
 Will require substantial
leadership to achieve the
technology development
 And the institutional
change that will be
needed to achieve such
an outcome: public-
private partnership

FUNCTIONAL AREAS IN ITS
1. Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS)
Integration of the management of various roadway functions, e.g. predicting traffic
congestion and provide alternative routing instructions to vehicles over regional
areas using real-time data.
2. Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS)
Providing date to travelers in their vehicles, homes, or places of work about location
of incidents, weather problems, road conditions, optimal routings, lane restrictions,
and in-vehicle signing.
3. Advanced Vehicle Control Systems (AVCS)
An enhancement of the driver’s control of the vehicle to make travel both safer and
more efficient, e.g. warning of a possible imminent collision.
4. Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO)
ITS technologies to improve the productivity of trucks, vans, and taxis operations.
5. Advanced Public Transportation System (APTS)
Enhance the accessibility of information to users of public transportation as well as to
improve scheduling of public transportation vehicles and the utilization of bus fleets.
6. Advanced Rural Transportation Systems (ARTS)
ITS technologies applied for relatively low-density roads.
