Matthew 12:33-37 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." Jesus using a metaphor or figure of speech to establish the direct connection between the mouth and the heart. He refers to the heart as the tree and the words that comes out of the mouth as the fruits. The kind of words that come out of your mouth indicate the condition of your heart. James 3:9-12 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. The two parallel illustration present two problems 1st problem The Old Nature The two trees represent two nature The corrupt tree • Is the old man or old self Titus 3:3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. The two trees represent two nature • The good tree • Is the new man in Jesus Christ 2 Corinthians 5: 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2nd problem The problem of an impure spirit - The fountain or the spring represent something spiritual. - A pure spring is the Holy spirit Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. - A corrupt, brackish, salty, impure spring is also the spirit useless to the body.
*These two pictures teach the same thing
A. It is what inside us which determine what comes out of our tongue. B. The problem of the tongue take us back to the problem of the heart.
* We are confronted by the truth that Solomon
spoke in Proverbs 4:23 Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
