AGENDA

• We intend to develop an innovative smart helmet which efficiently

checks if the person wears a helmet and to also ensure that he/she is
under permissible alcohol levels.
• Along with the above features, we would also like to extend this system
to pillion riders and also limit it to a maximum of 2 occupants on a
bike.
• Through this project, we hope to improve the rider’s overall safety
which as consequence should reduce the number of accidents in the
near future.
OBJECTIVE

• The main objective of the project is to design a smart helmet for accident
avoidance and alcohol detection.
• The IR sensor or Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) checks if a person wears a
helmet or not.
• The Gas sensor (MQ-3 sensor) is used to detect the presence of alcohol in
the rider’s breath.
• If both the conditions are satisfied, i.e. the person wears a helmet and the
sensor fails to detect any presence of alcohol, then the bike will start, else
it will not start.
INTRODUCTION

Road accidents are one of the most major causes of death all over the
world.
About 80,000 people are killed due to rash driving, drunken driving and
violation of traffic rules.
The occurrence of accidents involving motorcyclists is primarily due to
over speeding , non-usage of helmets along with appropriate safety gear
and non-adherence to road safety measures.
Background

Smart Helmet for safe driving

 Keesari et al. [1] have carried out this project where they have developed
a smart helmet which incorporates features such as smart ignition &
alcohol detection to ensure the overall safety of the rider.

Passive Safety System For 2- & 4-Wheeled Vehicles

 Vatsal et al. [2] have developed a redundancy-free passive safety system
for both 2- wheelers and 4-wheelers. They have used a temperature sensor
working in tandem with an ultrasonic sensor to gauge if the person wears a
helmet and embedded an RFID tag in the seat and a proximity sensor on
the seat belt to determine if one has worn it on.
Background

Design and Implementation of Smart Helmet Using Low Power MSP430

Platform
 Yogya et al. [3] have developed a smart helmet system using low power
MSP430 piezoelectric sensor in conjunction with a cooling system. They
have used three test cases viz. without fixing sensor to helmet, fixing it to a
hollow helmet, fixing sensor on helmet along with a person wearing it to
obtain the threshold values. The cooling system functions when the
temperature inside the helmet crosses the threshold value.
