POULTRY
1) There are two condition under which poultry
are maintained and under which production
can be improved and increased; namely that
pertaining to the supply of rural family and
village needs, and that for town workers and
other concentrations of money earning
peoples. Each demands a different outlook
and different methods. Urban populations are
rapidly growing and their need for poultry
products increases correspondingly.
2) As long as poultry keeping is confined to
the traditional methods, it raises no conflict
in priorities but at that level , production is
obviously limited in quantity. If it is to be
increased, a regular supply of nutritious
food must be provided and the interest of
the domestic fowl come into competition
with those of immediate human needs.
3) Nevertheless, as a converter of feed into
animal protein, the specialized domestic
hen’s efficiency is high: in fact, it is
estimated that in terms of food conversion,
poultry eggs rank with cow’s milk in being
the mos economically produced animal
protein, and poultry fresh ranks above that
of other domestic animals in this respect.
• Of the three common species of poultry,
fowls, ducks and geese, the first are by far
the most important in Indonesia, as they are
elsewhere.
