GOPIKA NAIR VG S9 B.ARCH ROLL NO:15 MES SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

INTRODUCTION

 Tribals are a group or community with similar ancestors, customs and

traditions. Tribals in Kerala (Adivasis of Kerala) are the indigenous population
found in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Tribals were earlier known in
Travancore – Cochin state as 'kattu jathi' and in Malabar as 'kattu kuruman', both
means people of forest. Now-a-days they are known as 'girijanam' or
'girivargam', meaning people of the hills.
 Most of the tribal people of Kerala live in the forests and mountains of Western
Ghats, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
 It is estimated that there are about 4 lakh tribal people living in Kerala and about
half of this population has made the interiors of Wayanad their home. The tribals
were the original inhabitants of Wayanad region.
 But once the British era opened roads to this region and commercial plantations
began to sprout, there occurred a migration of settlers to this region and during the
1940s this migration enhanced tremendously displacing the aborigines or Adivasis
of the area. The tribes lost their land and dwindled in numbers and now they
constitute only 20 percent of the total population of the district.

 The Tribal population have their on tradition and practices relating to the selection
of building sites, orientation of building and rituals to accompany certain stages of
construction.
 Their major concentration is in Noolpuzha (39.29%) and Tirunelli (40.72%). In all
other panchayaths, their population is below 30%. In the entire district, in
Noolpuzha, the tribals form the majority and they form 50.02% of the total
population.
 They have their own special lifestyles, culture, customs, and religious
practices. They do not have written script. Their history can be traced only through
their old traditions and religious practices.
 Due to the impact of welfare measures, co-mingling with non-tribals,
globalisation, changes taking place and even their peculiar cultural aspects are
becoming extinct.
 Now-a-days many tribals blindly follow modern culture. As a result they are losing
their unique culture, land and language. They have become a minority community
due to the migration and settlement of the non-tribals in Wayanad.
