BUILDING METHODOLOGY
The new buildings will be a synthesis of old and new techniques. This incorporates
the age-old rammed earth construction used widely in the area for its thermal
properties (temperatures range in Spiti from plus to minus 30 degrees Celsius) and
ferro-cement foundations, beams and columns for strength. This has proved
successful in a number of existing buildings, including the school classrooms and the
hostel.

The main expense for these buildings is the construction material, which needs to be
transported through difficult terrain. Labour from outside the region is imported
when necessary and where possible local support is utilized.
