BASELINE

MEASUREMENT
Distance measurement
Baseline Measurement

•Measured with the invar tape, Alloy

of Nickel has low coefficient of
thermal expansion i.e 0.000000122
for 1 ˚C.

•These are Available in the Lengths

of 30m, 50m and 100m.

•In order to determine the true

length of measure distances certain
corrections are applied to the
measure distances
Baseline Measurement
Definitions:
•Designated Length
or Nominal Length
is indicated as or
written as its length
(without Correction)

•Absolute Length
is the true length
between the two
points.
Baseline Measurement
Definitions:
Tape Correction

A correction is said to be plus or

positive when the uncorrected
length is required to be increased
in order to obtain the true length.

- ive correction when uncorrected

length is decreased to obtain the
true length
Baseline Measurement
Correction for Absolute Length
Absolute length =Nominal Length + Ca
Ca = L c/l
L = Measured Length
l = Nominal Length of a tape
Ca = Correction for Absolute Length
c = Correction to the tape
Baseline Measurement
Correction for Temperature
Ct =ɑ(Tm-To)L
ɑ = Coefficient of Thermal
Expansion
Tm = Mean Temperature during
Measurement
To = Temperature for which the
tape was standardized
L = Measured Length
Baseline Measurement
Correction for Pull
Cp = (P-Po)L/AE
P = Pull applied during
measurement
Po = Pull under which the tape
was standardized
L = Measured Length
A = Cross sectional Area of the
tape
E = Elasticity modulus of tape
material
Baseline Measurement
Correction for Sag
Cs = l 1(w l 1)²/(24P²)
Cs = l 1(mg)²/(24P²)
P = Pull applied during
measurement
l 1 = Distance b/w Supports
W = weight of the tape per unit
Baseline Measurement
Correction for Slope

C = l - √(l ²- h²)
C = h²/(2 l )
