Introduction to Geographic
Information Systems
Why is Geography Important?

Because almost all activities, and decisions, involve

Geography
What is Geospatial?

Geo(latin):
I. The earth

Spatial:
I. Relating to, occupying or having the
character of space
II. of or relating to facility for perceiving
relations(as of objects) in space
What about Geospatial Science

Geospatial Sciences are the

study of “where” objects or
phenomena are and how they
relate to each other

Generally relating to the earth

surface(or near surface)
Knowing “Where” is very important

Since almost everything happens somewhere,

knowing where that something happen is critical.
For example, Flooding in Afar and Jigjiga
region-2016

Why? • Evacuations
• Damage
• Utilities
Introduction to GIS
• GIS= Geographical Information System
o A computer system used for accessing, storing,
analysing and presenting spatial data
• GIS
o Is used for spatial presenting, analysis, …
o Is like a normal database but with a Geo-spatial
component
o Allows to query WHERE something is or WHAT is
found on a specific LOCATION (within a community,
near a river…)
Geospatial Technologies:
Geographic information
systems

Remote sensing

Global positioning system

Introduction to GIS software's
FOSGIS VS.Proprietary GIS projects(softwares)

GRASS GIS,
ARCGIS Vs. Quantum GIS(QGIS)
• ArcGIS: is a geographic information system (GIS)
for working with maps and geographic information
• QGIS: open Source – It comes with the right to
download, run, copy, alter, and redistribute the
software.
Introduction to GIS software: ArcGIS
Storing / working with data in
ArcGIS
• ArcMap
o Raster data
o Vector data (shapefiles)
• GEODATABASE
= sort of “working place”
where data is
stored and managed,
common in ArcGIS
o Raster data
o Vector data (feature files)
