How do living
organisms survive?
In order to live and
survive, organisms need
energy.
How does
energy flow
through an
ecosystem?
Autotrophs
A groups of organisms that
can use the energy in sunlight
to convert water and carbon
dioxide into Glucose (food)

Autotrophs are also called

Producers because they
produce all of the food that
heterotrophs use

Without autotrophs, there

would be no life on this
planet

Ex. Plants and Algae

Heterotrophs
Organisms that do not
make their own food

Also known as consumer

because they consume
other organisms in order
to live

Example: all kinds of

animals and bacteria
TYPES OF HETEROTROPHS

1. Herbivores - are 2. Carnivores -are animals

animals that get energy that get energy from eating
by eating plants and other animals
other vegetation.
Example: hawk, shark, crocs
Examples: goats, cows,
horses
TYPES OF HETEROTROPHS
4. Scavengers/Detritivores
– feed on the tissue of
dead organisms (both
plants and animals)

Ex. – Crows and Shrimp

3. Omnivores-are
animals that eat both
plants and other
animals.
Example: monkeys and
bears
TYPES OF HETEROTROPHS
5. Decomposers- are
animals that absorb
any dead material
and break it down
into simple nutrients
and fertilizers

Example:Mushroom
and Earthworm
How does energy transfer?

Energy is transferred when an

organism eats other organisms.
This is represented through a
food chain.
What is a Food chain?

A food chain represents the

transfer of energy through
a series of organisms in a
community.
Give an example of
a food chain.
Lets try this!!!
Identify the trophic level of the
organisms in the food chain
Lets try this!!!
In the example food chain, What
organisms is considered as:
a. Producer
b. Primary consumer
c. Secondary consumer
d. Tertiary consumer
 In this food chain, what is the
producer?

 What is the first level

consumer?

 What is the second level

consumer?

 Is the polar bear the 3rd level

consumer? Explain.
Say something about this picture. How many food
chain can you make out of this picture?

FOOD WEBS
Food webs describe the organisms found in
interconnecting food chains using pictures
or words and arrows.

In other words, food webs are a bunch of

food chains all together!

They describe the complex patterns of

energy flow in an ecosystem by modeling
who consumes whom or what
Energy Pyramids
An energy pyramid shows the amount of
energy that moves from one trophic level
to another in a food chain.

The most energy is available at the

producer level of the pyramid.

The availability of energy decreases as it

moves up the energy pyramid.
Food webs diagram the interaction of multiple
food chains within a certain ecosystem, showing
the mutual dependency of species and the natural
balance of habitats that sustain animal and plant
life.

Food webs are important tools in

understanding that plants are the foundation
of all ecosystems and food chains, sustaining
life by providing nourishment and oxygen
needed for survival and reproduction.
