SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF
CHIMNEY USING ABAQUS
Introduction

 Chimneys are tall and slender structures which are used to discharge
waste/flue gases at higher elevation with sufficient exit velocity to disperse
into the atmosphere
 It is essential to determine the wind, seismic and other demands of
chimney structures to prevent structural problems which lead to collapse
of the structure.
 The results of this analysis can be used to detect the vulnerable parts of the
chimney and can also be used to enhance the seismic resistance of the
chimney.
Literature Review

 Past researchers have done analysis of a RCC chimney subjected to

seismic load by discretizing the structure using lumped mass criterion
where the total mass of a part is assumed to act at a particular node. But
this method of discretization does not replicate the real time conditions of
the structure.
 Then, the chimney is modelled using beam elements and the analysis is
carried using software like STAAD Pro or SAP2000 which resulted value
closer to the experimental value.
 Further for more accuracy the chimney is discretized into several parts
using consistent masses criterion which includes the effect of rigidity to
bending, cross section of element, form factor and shear modulus.
Objective

 To develop a mathematical model of a Reinforced Concrete Chimney

using a Finite element software such as Abaqus
 To evaluate the response of chimney structures subjected to Dead Load,
Live Load, Wind Load and Seismic Load
 To compare the behaviour of different chimney models
 To compare the results obtained from different analytical methods such as
response spectrum method and time history analysis method
