 CATERING
The deck department is
responsible for navigation, cargo
handling, the maintenance of the
hull and deck equipment.
The engine department is
responsible for the
operation and maintenance
of the machinery
The catering department is
responsible for preparing
meals and maintaining the
accommodation spaces
CAPTAIN(MASTER)
The master is responsible for;
 the safe, efficient and economic operation of
the ship;
 the safety of all persons on board;
 safe delivery of cargo ;
 safe and efficient manoeuvring in port,
anchorage areas and similar places.

DECK
DEPARTMENT
CHIEF OFFICER(FIRST MATE)
The chief officer is in charge of the deck
department.
He is responsible for
 loading, stowing and discharging of cargo;

 the maintenance of all safety, cargo-handling


equipment and the overall structure of the
ship;
 crew’s welfare, training and discipline.
He is in charge of morning (4:00am-
8:00am) and evening (4:00pm-8:00pm)
watches.
THE SECOND OFFICER
(SECOND MATE)
 The second officer (second mate) is the
navigator and responsible for all
aspects navigation.
 He is also the medical officer on board.
 He is in charge of morning (4:00am)
until afternoon (12:00noon) watches.
THE THIRD OFFICER
(THIRD MATE)
The third officer is responsible for
 maintaining the vessel's life-saving
and fire fighting equipment and
general administration.
 The third officer stands first watch
(8:00am) and Afternoon (4:00am
Noon) watches.
CADET

Deck cadet is a student from one of


the maritime schools to become a
third officer.

BOATSWAIN (BOSUN)

 The boatswain (bosun) leads and


supervises seamen, deck maintenance
and repair.
 He obtains his work-schedule and
orders from the chief officer and reports
to the chief officer
ABLE SEAMAN

Able seaman supports the deck


officers in all aspects of bridge,
cargo and seamanship
operations.
ORDINARY SEAMAN

Ordinary seaman is junior position


to the able seaman and supports
the deck officers in all aspects of
bridge, cargo and seamanship
operations.
DECK BOY

Deck boy is an unexperienced


seaman and helps seamanship
applications on board.
ENGINE DEPARTMENT
CHIEF ENGINEER
The chief engineer is responsible
for the efficient operation of
ship's engines.
Chief engineer prepares various
reports, supervises any repair
and approves the ordering of
spares and equipment
SECOND ENGINEER
Second engineer is responsible for
 the maintenance of the main engine,

 the safety and cleanliness of the engine-


room,
 the ordering of stores and equipment
through the chief engineer
 the repair and maintenance of any
mechanical equipment on deck
THIRD ENGINEER

Third engineer is the watchkeeping


engineer responsible for the
condition and maintenance.
FOURTH ENGINEER

Fourth engineer is responsible for the


taking of bunker, the purification of the
fuel and the maintenance of the purifier.
He supplies the chief engineer with fuel
consumption figures daily.
CADET

Engineering cadet is also a student


from a maritime school to become
an engineer.
ENGINE ROOM CREW
OILER

An oiler helps the watchkeeping


engineer in all matters, especially in
taking data readings for the
logbook.
WIPER

Wiper cleans machinery spaces.


ELECTRICIAN

Electrician is responsible for the


maintenance and repair of all
electrical and electronic equipment
FITTER

Fitter does some mechanical


repairs and welding.
CATERING DEPARTMENT
CHEF COOK

The chief cook is responsible for the


ship's catering department.
 He reports to the chief officer, and
supervises the cook and stewards in all
aspects.
 The chief cook budgets and controls
the food guidelines, devises varied
menus, and is responsible for cooking for
the officers.
COOK

Cook assists chief cook and also


cooks, bakes and prepares food.
STEWARD

Steward is mainly concerned with


the general cleaning and making
service.
