(Manila : THE CORRUPTION OF A CITY)

1
2
✣ The American period was a time of major
physical and cultural change for Manila.
✣ During its first 20 years, the U.S. colonial
regime transformed Manila from a fortified
17th century enclave into a modern colonial
metropolis.

3
The american occupation of manila coincided
with a resurgence of urban planning in the
united states.
Inspired by the glistening grandeur of “ the white
city”
American reformers became convinced that
urban planning could revive the country's
grimmy industrial cities.
4
5
✣ The city's unhealthy site would always remain
a problem. Located at the Pasig River's
swampy mouth, most of Manila was just
above sea level and thus interlaced with
swamps and streams.
✣ Flooding and poor water supply made the city
prone to tropical disease, suffered poor health,
periodic flooding and destructive fires.
6
✣ When Manila grew from a large town into a
small city in the 19th century, the Spanish
seemed incapable of coping with its modern
urban problems. After taking over two
centuries to grow from 42,000 people in
1650 to 86,000 in 1780", Manila's
population suddenly doubled to 150,000 in
1818 and doubled again to 300,000 in 1887.

Authors argument
The authors express his frustration
with its discomforts and decadence in
some of the angriest cartoons of the
america. The author describe the
situation of the city and on how the
goverment gained the reputation of
laziness and the systematic of being
corrupted
17
Reporter's analysis of the cartoon/
documents
It show that eventhough the america
has build so many infrastructure in the
manila but the america has failed to provide
manila with a form of local goverment that
could solve its own problem. In that time we
are try to tend in america because we dont
have the power to stand against with them
and we are lacking of knowlegde on what we
need to do. 18
