WORK
defined as the product of the
force exerted on a body and the
displacement moved by the body
In mathematical form,
Work = Force x displacement
W = Fd
WORK CAN BE CATEGORIZED INTO TWO:
1.) Work done to change the speed of an object

Example: Changing the speed of a car

2.) Work done against another force

Example:
- An archer stretches the string of the
bow
- When we do push ups
WORK
 a scalar quantity
 The SI unit of work is the Newton-
meter (Nm), also called Joule (J) in
honor of James Prescott Joule.
SAMPLE PROBLEM 1

A 900N mountain climber scales a

100m cliff. How much work is done
by the mountain climber?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 2

How much work is done when a

force of 33N pulls a wagon 13 km?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 3

The baseball player does 1234

Joules of work when hitting a baseball
into left field. Assuming the baseball
landed 100 meters away from home
plate, how much force did the player
use to hit the ball?
SAMPLE PROBLEM 4

A stevedore lifts a cargo of 10kg

from the floor to a truck 1.2 m high.
How much work is done by the
stevedore?
Answer the following:
1.) Trigo pushes his box of toys against a
frictional force of 0.5 N for a distance of 5
meters. How much work does he do?
2.) A 10 kg object experiences a horizontal force
which causes it to accelerate at 5 m/s 2 ,
moving it a distance of 0.20 km, horizontally.
How much work is done by the force?
3.) A 10 N weight is suspended in the air by a
strong cable. How much work is done, per unit
time, in suspending weight?
Which of the following shows that work
is done? Explain.

QUIZ
A. Solve the problems.
1.) Amy uses 20N of force to push a
lawn mower 10 meters. How much
work does she do?
2.) How much work does an
elephant do while moving a circus
wagon 20 meters with a pulling
force of 200N?
QUIZ
3.) How much work is required to
pull a sled 5 meters if you use
60N of force?
4.) Tommy does 15 Joules of work
to push the pencil over 1 meter.
How much force did he use?
5.) Angela uses a force of 25
Newtons to lift her grocery bag
while doing 50 Joules of work.
How far did she lift the grocery
bags?
B. Identify the following actions if
it is a work or not work.
1. Pull a heavy sofa across the
room
2. To lift a stack of encyclopedias
from the floor to a high shelf
3. To push a stalled car off the
road.
4. Pushing the unmovable wall
5. Airplane taking off
ASSIGNMENT
Solve the problem below.
Steve exerts a steady force of
magnitude 210 N on the stalled car as he
pushes it a distance of 18 m. The car also
has a flat tire, so to make the car track
staright, Steve must push at an angle of
300 to the direction of motion. (a) How
work does Steve do? (b) In a helpful
mood, Steve pushes a second stalled car
with a steady force F = (160 N)i – (40 N)j.
The displacement of the car is d= (14 m)i
+ (11 m)j. How much work does Steve do
in this case?
