Chinese
Music
Chou Dynasty
- Music is one of the four subjects
that the sons of noblemen and
princes/princess’ studied.

Yanye – Chinese ritual music

Qin Dynasty
- Music was denounced as
wasteful pastime

Han Dynasty
- The Renaissance or
Rebirth of Chinese music.

orchestras.
Tang Dynasty
- Suyue, or Chinese secular
music reached its peak
and emperor Tai Zong had
10 orchestras.
The Chinese Opera
- Based on old tales of
heroes and the
supernatural.
Yuan Dynasty
- Developed the Chinese
opera called northern
drama or Beigu.
Ming and Qin Dynasty
- The development of
southern drama called
Xiwen.
19th Century
- Peking Opera or Jingxi
developed as a synthesis of
earlier provincial forms of
opera.
20 thCentury
- Chinese music was
influenced by Western
music.
