• Large family of viruses both in animals and humans
• Common cold to a more severe type of disease
• Crown like spikes on their surface
• First identified in the mid-1960s
• Seven types that can infect humans: 229E, NL63, OC43, HKU1,
MERSCov, SARS-Cov, 2019-nCOv
• common mild cold
- Adults (2-5 infections yearly)
- Children (6-10 colds yearly)
WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS (2019-NCOV)

• New strain

• Genetically related to SARS (China ;2003; 8,090 probable


cases;774 deaths) and MERS Coronaviruses (Saudi Arabia; 2012;
2206 cases; 787 deaths)

TRANSMITTED?
• Yet to be determined
• Person to person (about 6 feet)
• via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes
• droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be
inhaled into the lungs.
• currently unclear if a person can get 2019-nCoV by touching a surface or object that
has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

• Expansion of category coverage to the whole of China, following the recent


imposition of travel ban to travelers from Mainland China, including Hongkong and
Macau
• Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases with
other agencies and keypersons are to discuss developments and next steps on the
management of 2019 –nCov ARD
• PUIs are currently admitted and isolated. Stricter infection control measures are
being implemented in hospitals with PUIs and DOH in coordination with Bureau of
Quarantine is conducting contact tracing
