“a systematic attempt to provide answers to

questions” (Tuckman, 1999)
What is research?

“the systematic and objective analysis and

recording of controlled observations that may
lead to the development of generalizations,
principles, or theories, resulting in prediction

of a problem, for prediction, for invention, for
the discovery of truth, or the expansion or
verification of existing knowledge, all for the
preservation and improvement of the quality of
human life” (Calderon and Gonzales, 1993)

Good Research
Research must be:

Systematic: follows an
orderly and sequential
procedure

Empirical: procedures
and data gathered are
perceived in the same
manner by all observers
Characteristics of
Good Research
Research must be:
Analytical: critical
analysis of data to avoid
errors in interpretation

Objective and unbiased:

findings and conclusions
are logically based on
empirical data and no
effort is made to alter
the results
Characteristics of
Good Research
Research must be:
An original work: data are
gathered from primary or
first-hand sources

Based on accurate
investigation, observation
and description: all
conclusions and findings
must be based on actual
evidence
