Cornish Boiler

Introduction :

• Cornish Boiler is a fire tube boiler. It was first adapted by Richard

Trevithick's and, first installed at Dolcoath mine in the year of 1812.
This boiler has a long horizontal cylinder with a single large flue
containing the fire. Cornish boiler design has similarity with
the Lancashire Boiler
Application and use:

• Cornish boilers are used in many industries like textile, paper, sugar etc.
• Laboratories: sterilizing equipment used in medical, dental and pharmaceutical
industries.
• It is also used to produce steam to run steam turbine.
• It is also used in many marines
• Steam rooms, gyms, physical fitness centers, spas, saunas.
Components:

• Tubes. These are present inside the shell and hot gases flow through them.
• Shell. A big shell which contain water inside it as well as tubes. ...
• Side flue. Flue are the tubes which take hot gases after they passes out from the
fire tubes. ...
• Grate. ...
• Ash pit. ...
• Chimney. ...
• Stop valve. ...
• Safety valve
Working of Cornish Boiler:

Fuel is added in the grate area where it burn

to produce hot gases. There hot gases move
into the fire tube which take it inside the
shell where it exchange its heat with
surrounding water. Water take heat and after
some time it start boiling to produce steam.
Specification:

• Cornish boiler is much like the Lancashire

boiler. Cornish boiler has the ability to produce
steam at the rate of 1350 kg/hr and can take the
maximum pressure of about 12 bar. Dimensions
of the Cornish boiler shell is 4 m to 7 m in length
and 1.2 m to 1.8 m in diameter.
Types of Boiler:

• Cornish boiler.
• Lancashire boiler
• Scotch marine boiler
• Locomotive boiler
• Vertical fire-tube boiler
• Horizontal return tubular boiler
• Admiralty-type direct tube boiler
• Immersion fired boiler
Boiler Mountings:

• Boiler mountings are the safety devices which are fitted on the boiler
for its safe and efficient working.
• The list of main boiler mounting is as below
• 1. Water level indicator ( Water level gauge)
• Water level indicator is used to check the water level present in the boiler. There
are at least two water level indicator fitted on the front side of boiler. The
construction of water level indicator is like glass manometer. The same indicator
is used to indicate the amount of steam present in the boiler.
• metal balls are provided in the water level indicator which cut off the supply to
indicator in case of the bursting of glass tubes.
Safety Valves:

It is usually fitted with the pressure gauge. The

main function of the safety valve is to exhaust all
steam in case of explosion. Safety valve always
keep his eye on the internal pressure of the boiler
and if it exceeds then it provides path to the extra
pressure. The safety valves are always designed
with the predecided pressure later it can be change
according to use.
When the internal boiler pressure exceeds the
limit. the valve lifts from the valve seat to make
a way for excess steam pressure. The
predetermine value for the safety valve is
decided by the counter weight.
Stop Valve:

• A steam boiler must be fitted with a

stop valve (also known as a crown
valve) which isolates the steam
boiler and its pressure from the
process or plant. It is generally an
angle pattern globe valve of the
screw-down variety.
Boiler Accessories:

• Boiler accessories are those components which are installed either inside or outside the
boiler to increase the efficiency of the plant and to help in the proper working of the
plant.
• Economizer
• Air preheater
• Super heater
• Feed Pump
• Steam Trap
• Steam Separator
