FORCE & MOTION

MOMENTUM
•What do you do when you are at
the peak of your study or you’re
doing something then your parent
suddenly called you?
•What do you think will be the reason/s
why you will not immediately obey your
parent?
• Objectives:
• 1. Define Momentum;
• 2. Identify the factors that affect momentum;
• 3. Solve the value of unknown variables
MOMENTUM is the difficulty faced by an
object/moving body to undergo a sudden stop.
Factors affecting momentum:
1.Mass
2.Velocity
WHICH IS HARDER TO STOP THE BICYCLE THAT
MOVES SLOWLY OF THE ONE THAT IS FAST?
•The harder to stop is the
bicycle that moves fast
.
WHAT COULD BE THE FACTOR THAT AFFECTS THE
MOMENTUM OF THE OBJECT?

VELOCITY
WHICH FROM YOUR HEAVY AND LIGHTER
CLASSMATE IS HARD TO STOP?

• THE HEAVY CLASSMATE

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON WHY
HE/SHE IS HARD TO STOP?

• BECAUSE HE/SHE POSSESS A GREATER MASS

MATHEMATICAL FORMULA
FOR MOMENTUM
p= mv
where: m~mass
v~velocity
IF WE HAVE, A=B/C
In what part of the fraction is A and B
located?
Numerator
They are directly proportional to each other
When one variable increases, the other one increases also.
LET US COMPARE VARIABLES A AND C?

•A is numerator and C is denominator.

•As C increases, A decreases, as C
decreases, A increases
MOMENTUM IS DEFINE AS:
p=mv
What conclusion can you make base
from the equation?
•Mass and Velocity are
directly proportional with
momentum.
WHICH DO YOU THINK WILL HAVE GREATER
MOMENTUM OR HARDER TO STOP FROM ITS
MOVING STATE?WHY?
• Situation 1: TRUCK AND CAR

v=5m/s v=5m/s
• The Truck has greater momentum than the car. Since
we know that mass is directly proportional to
momentum, well automatically know that the truck is
harder to stop than the car as velocity will not affect
the momentum since its just equal both cases of
velocity.
WHICH POSSESS GREATER
MOMENTUM?WHY?
• Situation 2: TWO BICYCLES

v=2m/s v=6m/s
WHAT IF THE BOTH MASS AND
VELOCITY ARE DIFFERENT?

• No quantity/variable is constant in both

cases, use the formula to calculate the
momentum.
UNIT OF MOMENTUM:

• Kilogram (kg). Meter per second or kg.m/s

GENERALIZATION
WHAT DOES MOMENTUM MEANS?
WHAT ARE THE FACTORS AFFECTING
MOMENTUM?
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP OF
MOMENTUM TO THE MASS AND VELOCITY?
EVALUATION/ACTIVITY
• STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN ACTIVITY
SHEET
ASSIGNMENT

•Define Impulse
•What are the factors affecting the
Impulse
