Their Parents: A Basis
for an Action Plan at

A Thesis Proposal Presented to

2019
Rationale
 Theterm parent-child relationship refers to
the unique and enduring bond between
a caregiver and his or her child. To
understand the parent-child relationship,
we must look at the ways that parents
and children interact with one another
physically, emotionally, and socially
(Schissel, 2017). This is the reason why The
researcher is interested to study about
parent-child relationship.
Rationale
It includes:
 parenting involvement of parents and
parenting styles affect the relationship
of students with their parents.
 Parents involvement in school
activities help boost the student’s self-
esteem knowing that their parents are
supporting them.
 parenting styles, contribute to the
students’ achievement.
Rationale
 RA 9155 “Governance of Basic Education
Act of 2001”
 Section 1.2 – The parents and the
community shall be encouraged for
active involvement in the education of
the child. The participation, coordination
between and among the schools, the
local school boards, the Parent-Teachers
Associations (PTAs) must be maximized.
Rationale
 Parental involvement is specifically mentioned
as a key to student achievement to
accommodate the varying needs of parents
through parental involvement, give parents
the opportunity to have a voice in the
educational decision-making process and
hold teachers accountable to high standards.
 Despite the government’s show of support
and a plethora of research suggesting
parental involvement improves student
achievement, the partnership between home
and school is weak.
Rationale
 The purpose of this research paper is to
study the effects of parental involvement
on student achievement.
 The relationship between students and
parents is affected by the parenting styles
practiced by parents. Baumrind (1966)
distinguished parenting styles as
identifying one as too hard, one as too
soft, and one as just right.
Rationale
 time parents spent with their children.
According to Parker and Wang (2013),
parents who think they spend the right
amount of time with their children are about
three times as likely as parents stating that
they spend little time with their children to say
their parenting job is excellent.
 Child Trends (2013) states that students with
parents that are involved in their school tend
to have better academic performance.
Rationale
 Baumrind (1966) came up with three
major parenting styles namely,
authoritarian, permissive, and
authoritative parenting. The authoritarian
parent is very strict and expects his/her
orders to be obeyed. They show low levels
of warmth and responsiveness. It means
that they are not attentive to their
children’s needs.
Conceptual Framework
Main Objective
 to study the effects of parental
involvement on student achievement. This
is followed by an examination of the
effects of parenting on student
achievement, educators’ perspectives on
parental involvement, communication
between home and school, and
problems in parental involvement
initiatives.
Specific Objectives
 Thisresearch study sought to find out:
 the students’ relationship with their
parents in terms of time students spend
with their parents;
 parents’ involvement in school.
 parents’ ways of discipline.
Research Methodology
 Descriptive – developmental type of
research is used in this study.
 Developmental research is employed to
recommend an action plan addressing
the weak areas identified in the study.
 questionnaire and personal interviews was
the main research instrument used to
gather the data
Findings of the Study
 The way students perform in school is
somehow influenced by their relationship with
their parents. The time spent with parents
allows the students to discuss the things they
do in school. Parents will understand better on
how their children perform in school if they set
quality time with them. Regular
communication between students and their
parents allow them both to solve the
problems that might affect the schooling of
the students.
Findings of the Study
 The profile of the students’ relationship with parents shows
that:
 2.1 Parents always spent their time with children when they
need to buy materials needed in the performance tasks
(30).
 2.2 Parents seldom get involved in the activities of the
school like PTA meetings, family day, participate in school
programs and get the report card of their children during
card distribution (30).
 2.3 Parents always discipline their children when they
watch TV or movie all the time (20).
 2.4 Parents seldom discipline their children when they do
social media like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter all the
time.
Table 1 presents profile of Parental
Involvement in School.
Verbal Description Time Spent With Their Parents’ Involvement in Parent’s Way of Discipline

Parents School

Always 30 10 20

Frequently 10 10 15

Seldom 5 30 20

Never 15 10 5
Findings of the Study

them when they need tutoring,
 while 15 respondents say their parents never
spend time with them.
Findings of the Study
 About the Parents’ Involvement in school the data
reveal that:

 while 30 respondents say seldom on their parents’
involvement in the activities of the school like PTA
meeting, family day, participate in school
programs and get their report card during card
distribution.
 On the other hand, 10 respondents say that their
parents never get involved in school activities

Findings of the Study
 Parents Way of Discipline , as shown in the
data:

children in school.
Specific Objectives

Conclusion
 Based on the findings, it can be
concluded that students value their
relationship with their parents. Of the
three categories, time students spent with
parents had the greatest impact. It can
be concluded further that students
treasure the time that they are with their

Recommendations

 In the light of the findings and conclusion drawn from the

study, the following are recommended:

strengthen their relationship with parents like family days.

motivate their children.
