INSTRUCTION AMONG GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF HSU I. INTRODUCTION Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions is an art produced at the present period of time. Strictly speaking, the term “contemporary art” refers to art made and produced by artists living today. Today’s artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide range of mediums, contemporary artists often reflect and comment on modern-day society. The focus of the senior high school Contemporary Arts curriculum is appreciating the diversity of our local artists, our arts, crafts, and indigenous materials to strengthen the student’s identity of being Filipino, before he/she is introduced to the art of other countries. II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Contemporary Art initially grew along with Modernism; however, it is now viewed as divergent from that school. In 1910, Roger Fry and his colleagues founded the Contemporary Art Society. At the time, this was simply a private society where artwork could be purchased for public museums. Through the 1930’s more institutions were founded with the same terminology. Scholars in the field distinguished Modern Art as a specific style that did align with a specific time-period. In contrast, the contemporary style continues to progress as over time, which adds to the wide variety of approaches and outcomes. II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY As the previous educator mentioned benefits are the subjective. There are some who say that studying art is a waste of time and that students benefit more by focusing on more practical subject. Subjects in contemporary arts tend to deal with themes in contemporary life or with the subjects that interest us now. Finally, the study of contemporary arts, along with the other humanities, is key in teaching student’s empathy. Arts allows us to see through another person’s eyes which gives us access to an experience we might not otherwise have. The ability to empathize is fundamental to cohesive society III.
