Bluetooth Device

Bluetooth is a wireless short-range communication technology found in

millions products we use everyday, including headsets, smartphones,
laptops, and portable speakers.

Working
A Bluetooth device works by using radio waves instead of wires to connect
with other devices like computer, smartphones etc.
Bluetooth Technology
Strength
Devices are said to fall into one of the three classes.
 Class 1
Most powerful transmitting at 100 mW can operate up to 100m.
 Class 2
Most common kind transmitting at 2.5 mW can operate up to 10m.
 Class 3
Least powerful transmitting at 1 mW les than 10 m.

Is Bluetooth a Security Risk?

Bluetooth have major security risk, as it leaves data vulnerable to inception.
Hackers often use a Bluetooth connection to spread malicious files and viruses.
Advantages
 It is wireless.
 It is inexpensive.
 It is automatic.
 Low energy consumption.
 Share voice and data.
 Instant personal area network.

Disadvantages
Researchers have found that high exposure to RF
radiations can cause brain tumor and problems like
headache, fatigue and difficulty in concentration.
Bluetooth headsets emit wireless microwaves radiation
and “WHO” said “ it causes cancer”.
Bluetooth Diagram
Characteristics
Bluetooth can connect up to “eight devices” simultaneously and each device offers a
unique 48 bit address from the IEEE 802 standard with the connections being made
point to point or multipoint.
1st Version
1.2 at 1 Mbps
2nd Version
2.0 +EDR at 3 Mbps
3rd Version
3.0 +HS at 24 Mbps
The latest version is 4.0.
Core Specification
It defines the Bluetooth protocol stack and requirements for testing and
qualification of Bluetooth-based products.

The Profiles Specification

It defines usage models that provide detailed information about how to use
Bluetooth protocol for various type of application.
5 Layers of Core Specification
The core specification consist of 5 layers.

Radio
Radio specifies the requirements for radio transmission.

Baseband Layer
It defines physical and logical channels and link types.

Link Manager Protocol (LMP)

It defines the procedures for link setup and ongoing
link management
5 Layers of Core Specification (Contd.)
Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol
(L2CAP)

It is responsible for adapting upper-layer protocols to baseband layer.

Service Discovery Protocol (SDP)

It allows to Bluetooth device to query other Bluetooth devices.
