ARNIS
• is a form of martial art played usually with the
use of cane.
• -can be performed individually as an art,
with or without the use of a cane or as a means
of self-defense.
• - the game is played by two individuals who
are paired or matched by divisions or weight
categories ,in a court measuring 8 square
meters

• - players use the prescribed cane or stick in delivering artistic
and legal blows, strike, thrusts, and by disarming the
opponent to gain a point or score.
• - player wins if he has 5 points ahead, disarm the
opponent twice, of if his opponent commits 3 fouls.
• -best of 3 rounds
• -2 mins./round
• -practiced for self-defense and physical exercise
• -national sport of the Philippines
HISTORY
• 1564- Spanish Conquistador Don Miguel Lopez
de Legaspi and 380 armed Spanish soldiers
were amazed that the Filipino natives of
ABUYOG, LEYTE practiced stick fighting similar
to the English of ESPADA y DAGA or sword
dagger.
• -KALI was the major fighting method of the
Filipinos when they finally revolted against
Spain
• -KALI was thereafter known as ESGRIMA but
changed into ESKRIMA
• -KALI became ARNIS when it was outlawed
by Spanish rule
• 1896-Dr. Jose de Azas set up a school for the
study of arnis and fencing
• 1972-the Philippine government includes arnis
in “Palarong Pambansa”
• -The Ministry of Education,Culture and
Sports also included it as part of the physical
Education Curriculum

well as ARNIS PHILIPPINES
5 FORMS OF PLAY
1.ESPADA Y DAGA-(sword and dagger) or the
long wooden sword and short wooden dagger
2.SOLO BASTON-(single stick) in which a single
long wooden stick or rattan cane is used.
3.SINAWALI- refers to the intricate movements
of the baston used in cris-cross manner or
simple called doble baston( 2sticks)
4.PINGA-0r long bamboo stick
5.MANO-MANO,BUNO OR DUMOG
3 TRADITIONAL METHODS USED
IN TEACHING ARNIS
• MUESTRATION or PANDALAG-which teaches
the art of ALDABIS(striking) for defense and
offense through consistent practice
• LARGA MUTON OR LABANANG TOTOHANAN-
where 2 practitioners engage in free practice of
contest for testing fighting skills.
• SANGA AT PATAMA OR SOMBRA TABAK-which
teachers striking, thrusting, and blocking
parrying in a pre-arranged manner.

ARNIS TERMINOLOGY

• Abanico Corto and abanico largo-a strike


which consist of moving the stick in front of
the body in a fanning-like movement
• ANYO or FORM- a combination of pre
arranged or choreographed striking , blocking,
coordinating the arm and leg movements
,timing, and body shifting movements.
• ARNIS-from the Spanish word ARNES
• BANDA Y BANDA- a slashing or horizontal
movement which consist of pointing the stick
forward ,and moving it rapidly and horizontally,
from left to right in front of the body.
• ESPADA Y DAGA-form of fighting wherein long
and short sticks are used.
• KALI-ancient MALAYAN word , which refers to
a long bladed weapon.
• SINAWALI-an intricate technique of striking using 2
sticks wherein the movement resembles the woven
pattern of the sawali or split-bamboo mattings.
• LARGA MUTON OR LABANANG TOTOHANAN- a free
form of sparring which supposed to show and test
the skills of the arnis practitioners
• SANGGA AT PATAMA-a pre-arranged or
choreographed form of play consisting of striking,
thrusting, and parrying
• REDONDA or X MOVEMENT-a slashing or circular X
movement which is similar to double sinawali, except that the
blows are aimed at the head of the opponent
• ROMPIDA-a striking techniques which consists of circling the
stick overhead prior to each up and down striking movement
in front of the body.
• UP AND DOWN-or vertical movement which is similar to the
rompida except that the stick is not encircled overhead prior
to each up and down movement in front of the body.

BASIC SKILLS IN ARNIS

A. Correct Grip-very important to deliver every


blow with power, control and quickness.
B. Courtesy bow-to show politeness
•Attention or formal stance
•Natural stance position or Open legs stance
•Bow(with weapon , single stick, and double
stick)
•Right hand sideways
C.STANCES-are stationary ‘fighting positions”
•Attention or formal stance-stand at attention
like soldier with heels together and feet pointing
45 degrees. hands in front, holding the stick
•Open leg stance-similar with formal stance but
with legs one foot apart
•Forward stance-deep lunging stance
• Back stance-the feet are in L position, heels
align together .Rear foot bear 60% of weight
and front foot bear 40%.both legs are bend in
90 degrees
• Straddle Stance-similar to open leg stance,
except that the feet are spread much wider
.Arms and hands in fighting stance position.
