Self- Directed Learning

SDL as defined by Knowles (1975)

- A process in which individuals take the initiative, with
or without the help of others, in diagnosing their
learning needs, formulating learning goals,
identifying human and material resources for learning,
choosing and implementing appropriate learning
SDL Contd..

The self-directed learners are those who have self-

concept as independent learners , demonstrate a greater
awareness and motivation to take responsibility in
making learning meaningful, view problems as
challenges and are ready to change and enjoy learning.
Self Efficacy

• Bandura (2004) defined self-efficacy as one’s belief in

one’s ability to succeed in specific situations or
accomplish a task.

• One’s sense of self-efficacy can play a major role in

how one approaches goals, tasks, and challenges
(Luszczynska & Schwarzer, 2005).
Self Efficacy

• People who have high self-efficacy remove obstacles

from your path and standing up against problems but
those who have low self-efficacy when you encounter
a problem keep stop trying.
Motivation
• Motivation can be defined as the driving force behind
all the actions of an individual. The influence of an
individual’s needs and desires both have a strong
impact on the direction of their behavior.

• Individuals will satisfy their needs through different

means, and are driven to succeed for varying reasons
both internal and external (Ellliot & Covington, 2001)
Online Student Engagement
• “The extent or quality with which students are
committed and actively involved in their learning”
