ROLES OF

TECHNOLOGY FOR
TEACHING AND
LEARNING

manuelslibutaque
With the 4th Industrial Revolution,
nobody can deny the influence of
technology in our lives. As future
teachers of the 21st century, it is high
time that you prepare yourselves to
integrate technology in the
classrooms.

manuelslibutaque
 The fourth industrial revolution is
the current and developing environment
in which disruptive technologies and
trends such as the Internet of Things
(IoT), robotics, virtual reality (VR) and
artificial intelligence (AI) are changing
the way we live and work.
manuelslibutaque
So What Is The Internet Of Things?
 Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off
switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones,
coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost
anything else you can think of.  This also applies to components of machines, for example
a jet engine of an airplane or the drill of an oil rig. As I mentioned, if it has an on and off
switch then chances are it can be a part of the IoT.  The analyst firm Gartner says that by
2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices... That's a lot of connections (some
even estimate this number to be much higher, over 100 billion).  The IoT is a giant
network of connected "things" (which also includes people).  The relationship will be
between people-people, people-things, and things-things.
Impact
 The new rule for the future is going to be, "Anything that can be connected, will be
connected." But why on earth would you want so many connected devices talking to
each other? There are many examples for what this might look like or what the potential
value might be. Say for example you are on your way to a meeting; your car could have
access to your calendar and already know the best route to take. If the traffic is heavy
your car might send a text to the other party notifying them that you will be late. What if
your alarm clock wakes up you at 6 a.m. and then notifies your coffee maker to start
brewing coffee for you? What if your office equipment knew when it was running low on
supplies and automatically re-ordered more?  What if the wearable device you used in
the workplace could tell you when and where you were most active and productive and
shared that information with other devices that you used while working?
THREE DOMAINS OF EDUCATIONAL
TECHNOLOGY:
 Technology as a tutor. Technology
can support teachers to teach
another person. Laptops, tv,
YouTube, DVDs are there ready for
use to facilitate teaching and
learning.

manuelslibutaque
 Technology as a teaching tool.
Technology is a teaching tool but
can never replace a teacher. As a
tool it there ready to enlighten the
work of teachers
 Technology as a learning tool. As
a learning tools, it makes learning
easy and effective. It can produce
learning outcomes that call for
technology-assisted teaching.

ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY FOR
TEACHERS IN TEACHING

 Technology provides enormous

support to the teacher as the
facilitator of learning.
 Technology has modernized the
teaching-learning environment
 Technology improves teaching-
learning process and ways of
teaching.
 Technology opens new fields in
educational researches.

manuelslibutaque
 Technology adds to the competence of
teachers and inculcates scientific
outlook. (internet sources are fast and
accurate)
 Technology supports teacher
professional development. (online
education)
ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY FOR
LEARNERS AND LEARNING

A. Support learners to learn how to learn

on their own. These knowledge have 3
categories:
1. Declarative knowledge. Discrete pieces
of information that answers the questions
what, who, when and where.
manuelslibutaque
 Structural knowledge this is
declarative knowledge put
together to attain some form of
meaning. Example: “pencil” is
something used to write.

manuelslibutaque
 Procedural knowledge - the
knowledge of how to do
something.
B. Technology enhances learners’
communication skills through social
interaction.
 Patterns of communication:
 Point to point two way or one is to
one like internet chat, phone
conversation or even face-to-face
conversation
manuelslibutaque
 One to many outbound like a
lecture, or television. There is no
social interaction
 Many to many like group
discussion, buzz session, heads
together.
 Communication occurs through
technology (email) and around
technology (technology as a
manuelslibutaque
subject of discussion)
BENEFITS DERIVED FROM TECHNOLOGY
SUPPORTED COMMUNICATION

 Teachers may guide the leaners

virtually and making learning
unlimited.
 Enhances freedom to express and
exchange ideas
 Learners solve problems from multiple
sources
 Enhances collaboration by using
communication strategies with
wider community and individuals
in a borderless learning
environment.
Develop critical thinking, problem
solving, and creativity throughout
the communication.
manuelslibutaque
 Technology upgrades learners’ higher-
order-thinking skills: critical thinking,
problem solving and creativity.
 Critical thinking refers to the ability
to interpret, explain, analyze, evaluate,
infer and self-regulate in order to make
good decisions. This involves analysis,
synthesis and evaluation in Bloom’s
Taxonomy.
HOW TO DEVELOP CRITICAL
THINKING?

 Ask the right questions.

 Clarity: Can you give examples of…
 Accuracy: What pieces of evidence
support your claim?
 Precision; Exactly how much…
 Breadth: What do you think will the
other group say about the issue?
CREATIVITY

 Creativity is characterized as
involving the ability to think
flexibility, fluently, originality and
elaborately

manuelslibutaque
 Flexibility – able to use many points of view
 Fluently –able to generate many ideas
 Originality –implies being able to generate
new ideas
 Elaborately –able to add details
Creativity is not merely a set of technical
skills, but it also involves feelings ,beliefs,
knowledge and motivation.
SOME CREATIVE STRATEGIES:
(SCAMPER)
 Substitute – find something else to replace
 Combine – blend two things
 Adapt – look for other ways
 Modify/Magnify/minify – make a change
 Put to other use
 Eliminate- reduce; remove
 Reverse – turn upside down; inside out..

SURVEY IN THE USE OF ICT
ANSWER: YES OR NO
 Do you use technology in studying?
 Do you develop digital resources in studying?
 Do you use technology tools as a student?
 Are you expert in the use of technology tools?
 Do you have facilities to use technology tools at
home?
 Are you aware of the ethical and legal responsibilities
in the use of ICT tools?
 Are learning better with the help of technology tools?

CHAPTER ACTIVITY:
 Discuss these 3 concepts when
used as tools to help in the
teaching and learning:

1. Facebook
2. Blog
3. Multimedia
