IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION IN
TODAY’S WORLD
Firstly , we must understand the importance of
communication in this dynamic world we live in .

• Good & efficient system of communication helps

in better coordination & better control .

• It acts as foundation of pleasant relationship

between the seniors & subordinates, the workers
& management , the customers & sellers .
• Communication promote motivation by informing and
clarifying the employees about the task to be done,
the manner they are performing the task, and how to
improve their performance if it is not up to the mark.

• Communication is a source of information to the

organizational members for decision-making process
as it helps identifying and assessing alternative course
of actions.

• Communication can create a sense of transparency in

your organization, which builds trust between levels
of employees .
HOW LEADERSHIP IS RELATED TO
COMMUNICATION
• Communication is the leader’s “information
highway”; it flows freely in both directions and in
every circumstance – in good times and, especially,
in challenging ones.

• While strong leadership is fundamental to business

success, an organisation can only succeed when
employees at every level clearly understand where
the business is going, and they support, and do
what is required, to achieve business goals.
• The leader as communicator always tries to build
loyalty, focus effort , spark creativity among the
employees

• Leadership communication is not just a technical

skill , but involves critical leadership competency
for guiding organizations through conditions of
heightened transition & turmoil .
HOW LEADERS CAN ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION IN THE ORGANIZATION

Strategic communication has never been more important

than it is today . Employees expect to know about their
company’s plans, and they assume that they’ll
participate in company’s growth . That means that
leaders must make communication a personal priority
and drive its values throughout the organizations .
For leaders in any competitive company must have
following critical goals in order to improve
communication :

• To attract and retain talent .

• To maintain a steady course through transitions .
• To stay at leading edge of its industry through
constant innovation & renewal.

To accomplish these goals ,leaders must do three

key things , which is being discussed below briefly.
1. Create a community
• Leaders must be “community developers” fostering
trust & creating meaningful work environment.

• Personalized face to face communication with

employees conveys honesty & sincerity.

• A cohesive community requires a common

understanding of corporate goals.
• Transparent , honest communication is essential;
when leaders communicate candidly employees
are likely to reciprocate ,extending confidence
back to the company .

• Leaders are advised to use clear , direct languages

and avoid euphemisms .

• Leaders need to cultivate their listening skills

because group can’t be a community without two
way communication .
EXAMPLE
• A company where plant or unit managers take time to
welcome each new hire and explain the company’s
philosophy .
• Employees coming from organizations where they had never
spoken one on one with senior manager are pleasantly
surprised by this .
• This face to face communication with employees conveys
honesty & sincerity and it builds atmosphere of trust in the
workplace .
2. Steer a steady course
• Leaders should act as “navigators” setting directions &
instigating action , particularly at time of transition.

• Leaders must know the unspoken and spoken rules on how

to behave and communicate between other leaders to be
able to achieve the needed results/goals .

• Leaders must know how to foster empathy from employees

for organisational challenges .
• Explaining company’s objectives isn’t enough , a
leader must lay out reasons for the change to
employees and take into account employees
responses to proposed changes .
Navigation is a three step process i.e. ,

1. Leaders need to get people’s attention.

2. Then, he/ she needs to set clear direction .
3. Finally, he/ she needs to persuade employees to act .
EXAMPLE

• When MidAmerican Energy Company realized that

their monopoly over gas & electricity will be over in
future due to deregulation , leaders discussed
organization’s future.
• They held meetings at every level of management.
• Due to involvement of every employee into the matter
through animated sessions & individual meetings , it
yielded companywide insight into the changing business
climate & the need to take actions .
• This helped them to come at a consensus & take a
corrective course of action .
3. Commit to continual renewal
• Leaders should be “renewal champions” , creating an
environment where employees should feel that they
can speak up & be heard .

• In order to succeed in a global economy, businesses

need to adopt open communication methodology
throughout their organizations in which debate is
normal & beneficial.
• Everything from your values to your productivity tools
need to encourage participation and engagement —
otherwise you’re teams can’t work towards a collective
goal.

• A company in which employees feel comfortable engaging

in productive conversations & sharing what they know will
encounter greater success in the marketplace.
EXAMPLE

• At St.Louis based Emersen ,a global company who place

high priority on “healthy conversation “ in the
organization.
• Sometime back, when company decided to eliminate
some employee’s benefits, there was dissatisfaction
among the employees.
• Then a lower level employee called the CEO directly to
argue the action was wrong, & the CEO also reassured him
that he will reassess the the decision.
• This clearly shows the understanding between
management & the employees which is very good for any
organization .
