GAY-LUSSAC’S

LAW

HISTORY
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - HISTORY

• Discovered by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac in the early

1800's
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - HISTORY

• Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac

• was a French professor
• in 1802, published the law of expansion of gases by heat
• worked closely with other scientists to publish other significant conclusions about gases
and other facets of chemistry
• improved various chemical tools, such as the thermometer and the barometer
• was among those at the center of scientific investigation in France, and France was the
world leader in the scientific disciplines at the time
• also made discoveries in the reactivity of gases, specifically in the formation of water and
carbon dioxide
• His work directly influenced the research of Amedeo Avogadro in the formation of
Avogadro's Law.
CONCEPT
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - CONCEPT

• Gives the relationship between pressure and

temperature when volume and amount are held
constant.
• If the temperature of a container is increased, the pressure
increases.
• If the temperature of a container is decreased, the pressure
decreases.
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - CONCEPT

• Why?
Suppose the temperature is increased. This means
gas molecules will move faster and they will impact
the container walls more often. This means the gas
pressure inside the container will increase, since the
container has rigid walls (volume stays constant).
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - CONCEPT

• Gay-Lussac's Law is a direct mathematical

relationship. This means there are two connected
values and when one goes up, the other also
increases.
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - CONCEPT

• The mathematical form of Gay-Lussac's Law is:

P÷T=k
• This means that the pressure-temperature
fraction will always be the same value if the
volume and amount remain constant.
APPLICATION
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - APPLICATION

• Bullets and Cannons

• How they work are based on these principles: gas super-
heated by the burning of gun powder is trapped behind the
bullet and expands until the bullet leaves the barrel.
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW - APPLICATION

• Heating Food
• Someone opening an oven may feel a quick flow of hot air; the
air inside the oven is heated, therefore pressurized.  The same is
true when heating food in closed containers; often, a container
will open to release the pressure.  If it does not, opening the
container will quickly release all the pent-up pressure, which
can be very dangerous because the gases inside the hot
container may be super-heated.  This is why it is always best to
open hot containers away from your body and face.
