REASONS OF GRADE 11
STUDENTS WHO CUT
CLASSES
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND AND
RATIONALE
It is important that student attend class regularly,
performance.
Cutting classes is a coined term,
meaning not attending the required class in
one`s formal education without a valid
excuses or reason. In public schools cutting
classes is very rampant especially that
there is inefficient security relatively high
numbers of students, thus making it hard
to monitor each student (Unveiling the
Dark side of the Students).
Secondary student are much fond of
cutting classes because of the influence
of their friends, roaming around outside
the campus.
In Sto. Niño Senior High School which the
study will be conducted, There is an active
interaction of the student to the others who
belong to different culture and family. The
teachers are strict and fair in implementing
rules that includes the regular difference of
the student.
Based on our observations there has been
reported cases of students who cut class,
Therefore researchers wants to know the reasons
of student for cutting classes. To learn the effects
to the students who cut classes instead of
attending the class regularly. Whether their reason
is internal or in external influences that led them
to cut classes.
In the study conducted by Naila Khalid D/o Khalid
Mehmood ( 2014) there are three main factors acting a
student to cut class; chase participation, coordination
of the students with teachers and peers and lastly the
grade of the student. This three main factors became
the reason of students who are cutting classes.
Cutting classes harms exam scores and other
school activities (Taylor, 2012) it was said in the
study that students who do not attend their classes
regularly could really affect their grade in a way
that they were not able or they miss taking up
quizzes and other performance tasks.
Trice, Holland, and Gagne (2000)
also used self-reports revealing
that students with lower grades
cut classes more than students
with higher grades.
Applegate and Daly (2006)
revealed when comparing
surveys to grades that missing
class is detrimental to grades
regardless of whether or not
the student worked.
Cutting classes obviously decreases the
need opportunities for them to learn. (Belo,
2018) it was stated that this occurrence
would greatly be the effect that students
would not learn important lessons they need
to learn in order to be academically
competent.
Our study would greatly benefit the
students; they would become more
responsible. This study would help the students
to attend their classes regularly. And also the
parents/teachers, they would encourage their
student/child to attend their classes on time.
Likewise, this would give them
opportunity to help them or guide
their students/child in dealing with
problems that affect on the academic
performance.
