using their hind legs, but not their front legs, over a period of
28 days. 
• Limiting physical activity decreased the number of neural stem
cells by 70 percent compared to a control group of mice, which
were allowed to roam.
• Reducing exercise also seems to impact two genes, one of
which, CDK5Rap1, is very important for the health of
mitochondria
• The study was used to better help astronauts in space and
people suffering with Alzheimer's disease

HOW MICE LINKED TO HUMANS

• The research shows that using the legs, particularly


in weight-bearing exercise, sends signals to the brain
that are vital for the production of healthy neural
cells, essential for the brain and nervous system.
• Prospective studies indicate that physical inactivity is
one of the most frequent avoidable risk factors for
developing AD. Moreover, elevated physical activity
levels are associated with a lower risk of AD. The AD
patient who undertook exercise training showed
decreased neuropsychiatric symptoms, improvement
in cognitive function, and a slower decline in the
activities of daily life.

• We chose voluntary wheel running as it closely
mimics the choices humans have when exercising
because animals dictate the time, speed, and
distance of running throughout the experiment. Some
rats voluntarily run up to an astounding 20 km in one
night!
• The brain region showing the earliest and most
sustained neurotrophic upregulation in response to
exercise was the hippocampus. The hippocampus is a
brain region important in learning and memory and is
a target for early deterioration in neurodegenerative
diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
