POETRY
Task Requirements:
1. Design Language Arts activities for poetry,
prose and drama.

2. Explain the strategy and technique used in each


activity.

3. Describe how the activities to be carried out in


your primary ESL classroom.
Poem: Friendship Poem
Language Arts Activity: Creating a
Pre
Poem
1. Teacher displays the poem on friendship.
2. Teacher recites the poem and students follow after teacher.
3. Teacher elicits the poem and pupils clear their doubts on unfamiliar
words.

While
4. Teacher divides the pupils into five groups.
5. Each of the group representatives pick a theme from the box.
6. Pupils have to create their own shape poem based on the theme
they received.
7. Pupils work in groups to create their poem.

8. Once the pupils have created their poem, they are required to
recite their poems
using suitable gestures, movement and songs.

9. Group with the best movement, intonation, pronunciation and


tune will be
rewarded.
PROSE
The Little Gingerbread Man by Carol Moore
Language Arts Activity: Designing a
Town
Pre

1. Teacher introduces the characters in the prose ‘The Little


Gingerbread Man’ to the pupils using puppet sticks.

2. In groups, pupils are given a copy of the characters.


They are required to color and cut the characters to
produce their own puppet sticks. Pupils then need
to name them accordingly.

3. Teacher reads the prose aloud with the pupils.

the Gingerbread
Man went to as they are reading the story.

5. Teacher distributes an A3 mounting board, sets of colored
paper, and
boxes to the groups.

6. Teacher instructs the pupils to draft the maps of the town

places that the Gingerbread Man went to.

7. Using colored papers and boxes, pupils are required to


design and create a
town that includes the places mentioned in the story.
8. Pupils sticks the puppet that they had done before
according to the places
mentioned in the story.

9. Pupils are then required to label the places and the


incidents that
happened in the places in a pieces of paper and pastes
them on the town.
DRAMA
Dragon Trouble by D. M. Larson

Dragon Trouble is a children's play about a mischievous fairy who creates problems in
a peaceful kingdom just because she is bored. The dragons fight with the princesses
and knights until some magicians come along and help restore peace to the kingdom.
The excerpt used:
Language Arts Activity: Word Wheel

Pre
1. Teacher introduces an excerpt from the Drama ‘Dragon Trouble’ to
the pupils.
2. Then, the teacher will read aloud the excerpt from the drama
together with the pupils.
3. After they completed reading the excerpt from the drama,
teacher will discuss about the story with pupils.
4. At the same time, teacher will explain certain vocabularies which
the pupils might not understand.
While
5. Teacher introduces a game called ‘Word Wheel’.
6. ‘Word Wheel’ is a fun game which enables the pupils to interact
and improve
their language skills.
7. For the activity, teacher put the vocabulary words from the
excerpt earlier
altogether in a small box. The pupils flick the game spinner,
then pull out a word.
Once they have their word, the fun begins!
8. The pupils will have to act, draw, rhyme, or define
their word. They might also have to put it in a
sentence, name what part of speech it is, or give a
The ‘wheel’ that is used to play this
synonym or antonym for it.

9. Teacher gathers all the pupils back to the their own seats.

10. Teacher asks each of them to say out one to three words to
describe the lesson
that they had on that day.

11. Teacher ends the activity by distributing the full-text of the


drama, ‘Dragon
Trouble’ to each of them and instructs them to read the whole
story.
