Applied Saṁskṛitam
 Literary and applied Samskrutam
 Almost all the sciences we know are available

in our Samskruta texts.

◦ We all have heard of Artha Shaastram (Economics),
Dhanur Vedam (Archery), Jyotisha Shaastram, etc.,
in Samskrutam. (The book Science in Samskrit by
Samskrita Bharati hints on all these)
 Mathematics is all pervading (Omni-present)
in Samskrutam

2
Mathematics in Saṁskṛitam

 Chanting of Vedas follow Mathematics – Pada

Paata, Krama Paata, Ghana Paata, etc.
 Three different types of Number Systems viz.,

Kaṭapayādi Saṅkhyā, Bhūta Saṅkhyā and

Aaryabhatta Sankhyā
 Soundaryalaharee – Devi stuti written by Aadi

Shankara – verses 55 to 60 give construction

to draw Shrichakra – Shrichakra book
  Karnatic Music Raagaas and Mathematics

3
Mathematics in Saṁskṛitam…
 Sri Lalitaa Sahasranaamam is 1000 names on Sri Devi
- in the form of 182.5 shlokas in Brahmaanda
Puraana by Veda Vyaasa.
 To split these 182.5 shlokas into 1000 names -
another 40 shlokas. Apparently they are Devi Stutis.
But when we apply Katapayaadhi and Bhoota Sankhya
methods of number system of Samskrutam, they
give some formulae to split the shlokas.
 In general these 40 shlokas as Devi Stuti it is
literature.
 When Mathematics is applied, it becomes applied
Samskrutam.
 These 40 shlokas called as “Paribhaasha Stotras”
written by Sri Narasima Raya, guru of Sri Bhaaskara
Raaya – Paribhaasha stotra book 4
Mathematics in Saṁskṛitam…
 Yajur Veda Saṃhitā names the numbers upto 10421
and fractions upto 1/16th
 A shloka of Shiva Sankalpam – keeping Shiva in the
heart

5
Mathematics in Saṁskṛitam…
Every word of this is a mathematical number –
 Ekaa = One

 Dasha = 10 - Ten

 Shatam = 100 - Hundred

 Sahasram = 1,000 = Thousand

 Caayutam = 10,000 = Ten Thousand

 Niyutam = 100,000 = Hundred Thousand

 Prayutam = 1,000,000 = One million

 Arbutam = 10,000,000 = Ten Million

 Nyarbutam = 100,000,000 = Hundred Million

 Samudram = 1,000,000,000 = One Billion

 Madhyam = 10.000,000,000 = Ten Billion

 Antam = 10, 000,000,000 = Hundred Billion

 Paraardham = 100,000,000,000 = One Trillion 6

Vedic Mathematics
 Compiled by HH Jagadguru Swāmi Śrī Bhārati
Kŗşņa Tīrthaji Mahāraj (जगद्गुरु स्वामि श्री भारती कृ ष्ण तीर्थजी
महाराज; March, 1884 – February 2, 1960)

 As quoted by himself – “I had reconstructed

the sixteen mathematical formulae from the
Atharva veda after assiduous research and
‘Tapas’ (austerity) for about eight years in the
forests surrounding Sringeri”

Kaṭapayādi numbers and binary notation

entire IT works on Binary system – 0s and 1s – power is off or

Relevance to Chanda Shastra – Laghu and Guru – short and long

meters – the entire Chandas Shastra is based on this.

8
Mīmāmsā and Computers

Saṁskṛitam is the best suited language for natural language

processing using computers. The reason is that Saṁskṛitam fulfills
almost, all the criteria required for the grammar of computer
languages.

Lot many similarities between Computer Programming and Vedas –

project/ program management concepts, physical-logical
sequences, programs-sub programs, data transmission
methodology, etc., are seen.

Around 100 commands of computers irrespective of the language,

are mapped to the corresponding commands from Mīmāmsā

9
Saṁskṛitam – a Repository
 Saṁskṛitam is not just a language. It is the voice
of India’s soul and wisdom. It is the fountainhead
of our national life spring. It is the link between
our past and the present.
 Saṁskṛitam is the language of the knowledge

tradition of India.
 Saṁskṛitam language and literature is a hidden

repository of knowledge encompassing every

walk of life, be it science, technology, etc.

10
A lost heritage
 Originally it was known to have had 1,131
branches (śākas) in 4 Vedas as:
◦ Ṛg Veda – 21 branches
◦ Yajur Veda – 100 branches
◦ Sāma Veda – 1,000 branches
◦ Atharva Veda – 11 branches
 But today only 11 are traceable i.e., less than 1%
of Vedic literature is only available:
◦ Ṛg Veda – 2 branches – Śākala and Sāṅkhyāyana
◦ Yajur Veda – 4 branches – Taitrīya, Maitrayanīya, Kaṇva
and Mādhyandina
◦ Sāma Veda – 3 branches – Rāṇaaraṇīya, Jaiminiya and
Koutama
◦ Atharva Veda – 2 branches – Śaunaka and Pippalada 11
NASA says

In ancient India the intention to discover truth was so

consuming, that in the process, they discovered perhaps
the most perfect tool for fulfilling such a search that the
world has ever known — the Saṁskṛitam language.

12
Samskrit as NLP
In July 1987, Forbes magazine published an article:
“Saṁskṛitam is the most convenient language for computer
software programming”.
“Saṁskṛitam is extremely rich, powerful and expressive
language. Its potentialities are gradually being appreciated all
over the world and its application is being extended in different
fields. To mention a few, Natural Language Processing (NLP) –
goal of NLP is to build computational methods of natural
language for its analysis and generation. The association of
Saṁskṛitam with computer is constantly bridging the distance
between the Science of ancient world and the world of Modern
Science. Computer scientists and Saṁskṛitam pundits all over
the world are trying to use the computer Technology in the field
of Saṁskṛitam studies. Many such efforts have already started
in India also”.

Change the scenario

Technology

Western Theories
INDIAN THEORIES

14
Opportunities missed
 Industrial revolution
◦ We missed this with some hasty decisions
 IT revolution
◦ Indians are serving in the level of coding ; not in
designing level !
 Knowledge Revolution
◦ We should take this advantage

15
Need of the hour
 We need
◦ To understand how Science and other technology
works
◦ To understand the contemporary problems
 Then
◦ We will be able to give solutions in the light of
Samskrutam and show the relevance of Indian
theories
