Emotional Intelligence

 In the organizations of today people


must possess traditional intelligence, as
well as emotional intelligence.
 The term was used by Peter Solovey of
Yale University and John Mayer of New
Hampshire University for the first time.
 First of all let us understand few concepts
like Emotions, Emotional Intelligence
and components of EI in the context of
organizations.
WHAT ARE EMOTIONS

EMOTIONS

These are intense feelings which are directed


at someone or something.
VARIETIES OF EMOTIONS
 There are six universal emotions:
- Anger,
- Fear,
- Sadness,
- Happiness,
- Disgust and
- Surprise.
EMOTIONS
 FELT EMOTIONS
An individual’s actual emotions.
 DISPLAYED EMOTIONS

Emotions that are organizationally required


and considered appropriate in a given job.
 EMOTIONAL LABOR

When an employee expresses organizationally


desired emotions during interpersonal
transactions.

INTELLIGENCE

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity for


recognizing our own feelings and those of
others, for motivating ourselves, and for
managing emotions well in ourselves and in
our relationships.

EQ refers to how well an individual handles
himself and others rather than how smart or
capable he is in terms of technical skills. It
includes the attributes of self awareness,
impulse control, persistence,confidence, self
motivation and empathy.

 A passion to work for reasons that go
beyond money or status – a propensity to

Empathy
 The ability to understand the emotional
make up of other people. Skill in treating
people according to their reactions.

 Proficiency in managing relationships and


building netwroks.

 Effectiveness in leading change-persuasiveness,


expertise in building and leading teams
How To Enhance Emotional Intelligence Of
People

EI can be learned at any age. But it


requires lot of time,practice and
commitment

Organizations of today must have


emotionally intelligent people. They must
possess required emotional competencies

A FINAL NOTE

 EI motivates people to pursue their unique


potential and purpose and activates their
innermost values and aspirations, transforming
them from things they think about to what they
like.
