RECYCLING

– Recovery and reprocessing of waste materials for use in new products.

– The basic phases in recycling are the collection of waste materials, their processing or
manufacture into new products, and the purchase of those products, which may then
themselves be recycled.
– The materials reused in recycling serve as substitutes for raw materials obtained from
such increasingly scarce natural resources.
– Examples - petroleum, natural gas, coal, mineral ores, and trees.
TYPES OF RECYCLING
OPERATIONS
Internal Recycling -
– It is the reuse in a manufacturing process of materials that are a waste product of that
process.
– It is common in the metals industry and distilling industry.

External Recycling –
– It is the reclaiming of materials from a product that has been worn out or rendered
obsolete.
– Example - collection of old newspapers and magazines for repulping and their
manufacture into new paper products. Aluminum cans and glass bottles.
3Rs – REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE

– Best way to reduce waste and conserve resources.

– Helps to cut down on the amount of waste that are thrown away.
– Helps to conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy.
– Saves land and money communities must use to dispose of waste in landfills. Siting a
new landfill has become difficult and more expensive due to environmental
regulations and public opposition.
REDUCE

– The best way to manage waste is to not produce it. This can be done by shopping
carefully, like -
– Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins.
– Avoid disposable goods, such as paper plates, cups, napkins, razors, and lighters.
– Avoid over-packaged goods.
– Use electronic mail instead of sending paper mails.
– Print both side of the paper to reduce paper wastage.
REUSE

Items that can be Reuse –

– Old jars and pots, tyers, newspaper, waste paper, envelopes.
– Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of paper cups.
– Reuse grocery bags or bring your own cloth bags to the store.
Items that can be sold/donated to others –
– Old books, old clothes, old electric equipment, rechargeable batteries.
– Toys, and furniture
RECYCLE

– Last stage of waste hierarchy.

– It is a series of steps that takes a used material and processes, remanufactures, and
sells it as a new product.
– Buying of products made from recycled material.
– Using products that can be recycled such as glass jars.
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

– Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.

– Conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.
– Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials.
– Saves energy.
– Save money.
– Conserves valuable resources and prevent loss of biodiversity.
– Creates more employment opportunities.
NEED FOR CONSERVING
NATURAL RESOURCES
– Resources are limited and our wants are unlimited
– Non renewable resources
– To ensure that the future generations will be able to access the resources
– To maintain ecological balance for supporting life
– To preserve biodiversity
– To make sure human race survives
HOW RESOURCES CAN BE
CONSERVED
Water
– Rainwater Harvesting
– Dams and Reservoirs: Dams help to store water and supply them when needed.
They also help in producing energy.
– Growing Flora: It helps to prevent the flow of water and makes it sink into the soil
increasing groundwater levels.
– Treatment of Industrial Wastes
HOW RESOURCES CAN BE
CONSERVED
Soil
– Afforestation
– Terracing: Terrace farming helps to control the fast flow of water which takes away
soil with its flow. It is usually practiced in hilly areas.

Fossil fuels/ Energy Sources

– Includes coal, oil, gas and petrol
– Taking public transport or walking instead of car.
HOW RESOURCES CAN BE
CONSERVED
– Using alternative energy – CNG vehicles (or solar power) instead of fuel vehicle.
– Promoting green technology like solar panels and other renewable sources of energy.
– Spreading awareness among people about the need for conservation.

Biodiversity
– In-situ conservation: Protecting plants and animals within their natural habitats.
Example- National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries etc.
– Ex-situ conservation: Protecting the plants and animals outside their natural habitat.
It includes Seed Banks, Pollen Banks, Botanical Gardens, Zoo, Gene Banks etc.
GROWING TRENDS OF
RECYCLING
– Global warming
– Heavy pollution
– Threat to biodiversity and natural resources
– Exhaustion of Natural Resource
– Government rules and regulations
PROMOTING RECYCLE
CONCEPT
Companies recycling their own products - Companies using recycled plastics for
making their products –
– Levi’s – Parley x Adidas

– Nike – Allbirds

– MAC – Everlane

– Lush and the Body Shop – Patagonia

– Boots Opticians – Rothy’s

DISADVANTAGES OF RECYCLING

– High upfront capital costs

– Products from recycled waste may not be durable
– Some times recycling might be expensive
– Recycling is not widespread on large scale
CONCLUSION

– The amount of waste which is created by human being is increasing day – by – day and
recycling is the best way to reduce it.
– In order to preserve natural resources for future generation the concept of recycling (3
Rs – waste management) should be promoted.
