Example :
• She was lethargic; she didn’t have the energy to get out
of bed
• Apple; red fruit grow on trees is delicious
• Doni is gregarious, unlike his brother who is qute and
shy
• Since it was raining outside ,I used my bumbershoot to
keep from getting wet.

DEFINITION

• Context clues are hints that the author gives to help


define a difficult or unusual word.
• The clue may appear within the same sentence as the
word to which it refers.
• By using the context means to find out what words
mean by how they are used in the sentence or
paragraph they appear
• It helps us to become better, perceptive readers.

DEFINITION

• Context clues are hints found within a sentence,


paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to
understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.
Learning the meaning of a word through its use in a
sentence or paragraph is the most practical way to
build vocabulary, since a dictionary is not always
available when a reader encounters an unknown word.
A reader must be aware that many words have several
possible meanings. Only by being sensitive to the
circumstances in which a word is used can the reader
decide upon an appropriate definition to fit the
context. used in the sentence or paragraph they appear.

DEFINITION

• The meaning of the vocabulary word is in the sentence


itself, usually following the vocabulary word.
• Definition are usually set off by commas or dashes , and
may include the use of the words , as, or, that is, and
etc.
• Example :
• Apples, red fruits that grow on trees, are my favorite.
• Teacher, person that teaches students, is my dream
job.
ANTONYM

• The sentence uses a word withan opposite definition to


give the meaning of the vocabulary word.
• The types of context clues usually includes the words:
whereas, unlike, as opposed to, however, but, etc.
• Example:
• Unlike Jen, who was easygoing, Naira was fastidious
• Beth has a gregarious personality. Jenna is rather quiet.
• When the light brightens, the pupils of the eyes
contract; however, when it grows darker, they dilate.
• “Dilate” means the opposite of “contract.”
SYNONYM
• Words with similar meanings are used within the same
sentence, or around the unfamiliar word.
• The reader may discover the meaning of an unknown
word because it repeats an idea expressed in familiar
words nearby. Synonyms are words with the same
meaning.
• Examples:
• a. Flooded with spotlights – the focus of all attention –
the new Miss America began her year-long reign. She was
the cynosure of all eyes for the rest of the evening.
“Cynosure” means “the focus of all attention.”
• b. The mountain pass was a tortuous road, winding and
twisting like a snake around the trees of the
mountainside.
• “Tortuous” means “winding and twisting.”
EXAMPLE

• Sometimes when a reader finds a new word, an


example might be found nearby that helps to explain its
meaning. Words like including, such as, and for
example, point out example clues.
• Examples:
• Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and
trout, live in the coldest parts of the ocean.
“Piscatorial” obviously refers to fish.
