3D SCANNING OF RIVER BEDS BY

ACOUSTIC DOPPLER CURRENT

PROFILER

-Depth points, velocity map , Bathymetry

map, change of river beds & discharge are
obtained
IRBM PROVISIONS
 Para 711(Annexure 7/1): Water levels to be
recorded daily. In addition, gauge and afflux
readings to be recorded.
 Para 711(Annexure 7/2): Cross section of river
during floods to be recorded and five years records
to be plotted on each diagram in different colours
for comparison. Similar action to be taken after
floods.
 Para 712(Annexure 7/3): Survey of course of river
soon after monsoon extending to at least 3 km
upstream and 1 km downstream to be prepared.
 Para 712(Annexure 7/4): Cross section of guide,
subsidiary and retired bunds to be prepared and
record of five years to be plotted and compared.
INTRODUCTION
 Modern acoustic depth-sounding instruments and
GPS equipment mounted to a floating raft, a small
team of hydraulic engineers can map the
bathymetry of 50 or more river miles in a matter of
days
 3D Scanning(bathymetry survey) is helpful in
maintaining records related with floods and river
bed profile for taking critical decisions as per IRBM
Para 711 and 712 .
 Bathymetry survey for important Railway bridges
can be done in 3-4 hours.
 The newest generation of acoustic Doppler
current profilers (e.g., Sontek Hydro Surveyor
ADCP) has up to five acoustic beams acquiring
spatially distributed samples of water depth,
thus greatly increasing the resolution and
quality of the data without any increased
man-hours in the field.

HYDRO SURVEYOR
 A system designed to
collect bathymetric, water
column velocity profile,
and acoustic bottom
tracking data as part of a
hydrographic survey.

 Key components of the

system are the Hydro
Surveyor Acoustic Doppler
Profiler (ADP®) platform,
and the powerful, yet user-
friendly, data collection
software.

 The Hydro Surveyor is an

“all in one” survey
solution.
Hydro Surveyor or similar instruments shall
confirm to following specifications:-
 ADCP with multi-transducer, multi acoustic-frequency
with Smart Pulse HD in a single instrument.
 2.4 GHz radio-modern module 1500m range equipped
with replaceable/rechargeable batteries telemetry system
between ADCP and filed Laptop.
 The ADCP should have internally integrated RTK GPS with
minimum 3 to 5 cm accuracy. The RTK GPS will be used
for sites where moving bed is observed and for
bathymetry survey applications for accurate positioning.
 2.4 GHz radio-modern module 3000m range equipped
with replaceable/rechargeable batteries telemetry system
between Base and Rover
 Ping rates up to 70 Hz.
 The ADCP should use 4-beam Janus array for velocity
transducer configuration along with a 1 vertical acoustic
beam for improved accuracy in the depth measurement.
 Vertical beam should also be used as an echo-sounder.
 CTD ( Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) instrument
for water sound speed corrections for calibrating the
acoustic system
 Range: Range of Vertical beam and slanted beam shall be 0.2
m-80m & 0.2m-40m respectively. Beam angles of Vertical beam
and slanted beam shall be 8° & 3° respectively. Depth resolution
shall be 0.001m. Profile range for distance and velocity shall be
0.06m-40m & ± 10 m/s respectively. Acoustic bottom tracking
range and altitude shall be ± 10 m/s and 0.2m-40m respectively.

 SonTek RTK GPS- Horizontal Precision (repeatability) shall be

<0.03m.

 Transducer Configuration shall be 8-beam Janus(4x1

MHz:4x3MHz) and 1 Vertical; Beam (0.5 MHz).

 Temperature Sensor Resolution and accuracy shall be

±0.01° C and ±0.1° respectively.

 Compass shall be Solid State Type with Built in inclinometer with

360° range having heading & tilt accuracy of ±2° & ±1°
respectively.

 Power shall 12-18 VDC.

 Operating and Storage Temperature shall be -5° C to 45° C.

The new SonTek HydroSurveyor along with an
integrated RTK GPS mounted all on a floating
platform along with the Hypack Survey tool
and
the Castaway CTD is a complete package
for the
Sedimentation surveys.
TETHERED BOAT

Specifically designed
with the full forces of
nature in mind, uses a
highly buoyant
material, secure
mounting hardware for
the RiverSurveyor and
HydroSurveyor ADP
systems, and bright
fluorescent laminate for
easy detection in
larger bodies of water.
