Topics to be explained in following presentation.

 Introduction
 Partsof chain drive.
 Advantages and Disadvantages.
 Application of chain drive
 General recommendations.
 Selection method for automobile application.
Introduction.
A chain drive can be defined as a series of links
connected by pin joints.
They are used for transmitting mechanical
power from one shaft to the other.
It consist of an endless chain wrapped around
two sprockets.
The chain drive is tightened or loosened by
adjusting it’s central distance between the two
sprockets or by using an intermediate sprocket.
It is also called as flexible gear drive.
Introduction
Parts of chain drive.

1) Pin
2) Bushing
3) Roller
4) Inner link plate
5) Outer link plate.
Stresses induced in chain drive
Advantages and Disadvantages.
 Advantages:-
1. Chain drive can be used over wide range of
distances.
2. Chain drive does not slip, hence it gives
positive drive.
3. Efficiency of chain drives is high from 96% to
98%
4. Chain drives are easy to replace.
Advantages and Disadvantages.

 Disadvantages:-
1. Chain drive are not suitable for non parallel
shaft.
2. Chain drive operates without full lubricant
film between joints unlike gear therefore it
results in more wear at joints.
3. Chain drive requires housing
4. Chain drive requires precise alignment of
shaft.
Application’s of chain drive.

1. Bicycle
2. Automobiles
3. Suspending, raising, lowering loads in material
handling equipment's. (Load lifting chain)
4. Carrying material by sliding, pulling or
carrying in conveyors (Hauling chain)
5. Building construction
6. Agriculture machinery
General recommendations for the design of
chain drive.
1. For lowering the noise minimum no. of teeth
on sprocket should be 21.
2. Centre distance between the axes of driving
and driven shafts should be 30 to 50 times of
pitch of the chain.
3. Idler sprocket should be used to reduce the
slack in chain.
4. Multi-strand chains are recommended when
high power is to be transmitted.
5. The chain should be properly lubricated.
Selection of chain drive for automobile

Selection of chain drive is mostly done from the

manufacturer catalogue.
It is done by knowing any of the following
points:-
1. Horsepower to be transmitted
2. RPM of the driving and driven sprocket (speed
ratio)
3. Load classification
4. Space limitations if any.
Selection of chain drive for automobile
There are many manufacturer catalogue varying from
company to company.
The standards used for chain drive are:-

1. American series (ANSI standard)

2. British standards
They are designated by letters “A” or “B” as suffix for
respective standards.
E.G. Let us consider the designation ‘08B’.
 The pitch of this chain is (08/16) inch or (08/16) Y
(25.4) mm, i.e., 12.7 mm.
The letter B indicates British standard series.

Tooth correction factor (K2)

For e.g. :-
A chain drive is used in a special purpose
vehicle. The vehicle is run by a 30 kw rotary
engine. The efficiency of drive should be 90%.
The driving sprocket rotates at 300 rpm. The
driven sprocket rotates at 100 rpm. And a very
high torque is to be transmitted.
 Now,
 first find power to be transmitted from chain.
Selection of chain drive for automobile
 Now,
 first find power to be transmitted of chain.
 Power transmitted = power * efficiency
= 30(0.9)
= 27 Kw
 Now,
 For moderate shock condition the service factor
is given from table of service factor (Ks)
 Therefore, Ks = 1.4
Selection of chain drive for automobile.
 Now,
 Selection of no. of strands .
 As no. of strands depends upon torque to be
transmitted.
 In our case as high torque is to be transmitted
therefore no. of strands (K1) is selected as 3 from
table.
 Now,
 Tooth correction factor (K2) is selected from the
table depending on the basis of no. of teeth on
sprockets.
Selection of chain drive for automobile.
  As, the no. of teeth are 17. Therefore, (K2) is

selected as 1.00
 Now,
 Power rating of chain =
 =
 = 12.6 Kw
 Therefore, from power rating table for 12.6 Kw
“16B” type roller chain drive is selected.
