Unit 3 – Earth’s changing

surface
Lesson 1 – Day 3
In this section….

 You will be able to explain how

natural occurrences and living
things affect the earth’s surface -
highlighting the patterns of the
processes of these changes.
 You will be able to form an
argument on how a certain natural
process shaped a certain natural
phenomenon.
MATERIALS NEEDED:

RED FOLDER
PENCIL
OBSERVATION SHEET FROM LAST
TIME
Today….

 We are going to have a discussion on our stations last time.

 Explain the different processes behind these experiences.
 Observe where we see evidence of these processes happening.
WHAT’S GOING
ON?
A PHENOMENON INVESTIGATION

A phenomenon is a situation or event that has a

puzzling explanation or reason for existing.
WHAT’S GOING ON? – guiding questions

 STATION #1: SAND AND WATER

 WHAT DID YOU NOTICE?
 WHAT WAS CHANGING? AND HOW WAS IT CHANGING?
 WHY DO YOU THINK THIS WAS HAPPENING?

 STATION #2: SAND AND STRAWS

 WHAT WAS CHANGING? AND HOW?

 STATION #3: TREES AND ROCK

 HOW DO YOU THINK SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED? WHY?
 HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN REAL LIFE? WHEN?
 DO YOU THINK THIS IS A HARMFUL OR HELPFUL THING?
WEATHERING

 Weathering is the natural process of

breaking down rock.
 Your third station was an example of
a type of weathering.
 Rock is broken down – wind and
water are common things that
break rock down. But also ice and
living things can cause this (again,
your tree example).
 This is a “breaking process” This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
EROSION

 Erosion is the natural process that

occurs when weathered bits of rock
or soil are loosened and moved from
one place to another.
 Your first and second station were
examples of erosion.
 Water, wind and living things can all
cause erosion.
 This is a “taking process”
 Can you connect erosion back to our
original phenomenon? (the
shoreline?)

DEPOSITION

 Deposition is the natural

process that occurs when
eroded pieces of rock or soil
stop moving and settle in a
new place.
 Where did you see
deposition in your stations?
–tell your neighbor!
 This is a “dropping process”.
