What Is Hijrah ?

 Hijrah literally means: Migration

 Technical meaning: The Hijrah (Arabic:‫) هجرة‬is the

migration or journey of the Islamic prophet
Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to
Yathrib, that later on renamed by him to Medina, in
the year 622 CE
 A Brief History Of Islam

 Islam originated in Mecca, at the start of the 7th

century.

 In 610 CE, Hazrat Muhammad( ‫صلى الله عليه‬

‫) وسلم‬ began receiving divine revelations.

 Muhammad's(‫ ) صلى الله عليه وسلم‬message won

over a handful of followers and was met
with increasing opposition from notables of Mecca.

 The opposition in Mecca started when
Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬ delivered verses that condemned idol
worship and polytheism. 

 At first, the opposition was confined to ridicule and sarcasm

but later morphed into active persecution that forced a
section of newly-converts to migrate to neighboring
Abyssinia (present day Ethiopia). 

 Sumayyah bint Khabbab, a slave of Abu Jahl, is famous as

the first martyr of Islam; her master killed her with a spear
when she refused to give up her faith.

Muhammad(‫) ﷺ‬   

 Abu Talib died in 619 CE. Abu Lahab assumed leadership of

the Banu Hashim clan and withdrew the clan's protection
from Hazrat Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬endangering him and his
followers. 

 Abu Jahl put forth the idea of assassination of

Hazrat Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬

 “And We have put a barrier before them, and a barrier behind them, and
We have covered them up, so that they cannot see.” [36:9]

 The prophet lived in Mecca for 13 years and he had

done all his efforts for inviting to Islam, so Islam
expanding was fully complete there and if the Islam
remained in Mecca, only some of Meccan converted
to Islam and it was possible that they waste and
disappear after lapse.
