Broad Outline

• The term “transperent concrete” has the
potential to be somewhat misleading. The concrete
itself is not translucent, nor is it any different to
conventional concrete. Concrete is one component of
a revolutionary new material marketed as “translucent
concrete”. This product also contains glass fibre
optics which has the capacity to communicate light
frequencies. Perhaps a more suitable term could be
“light transmitting concrete”. It is important to
differentiate, as past attempts have been made to
create an actual translucent concrete, however such
attempts have generally proven unsuccessful as the
product becomes fragile, and incapable of
withstanding wind and rain.

Abstract

This article deals with the usage of translucent
concrete and also the advantages it brings in the field
of smart construction, that it can reduce the power
consumption of illumination and use the optical fibre
can be made to sense the stress of structures and this
concrete as an architectural purpose for good
aesthetical view of the building. Transperent concrete
is a concrete based material with light-trans missive
properties, obtained by embedding optical fibres in it.
Light is conducted through the fibre from one end to
the other. This results into a certain light pattern on
the other surface, depending on the fibre structure.
Optical fibres transmit light so effectively that there is
virtually no loss of light conducted through the fibres.

Introduction
•• Due to economic development and space
utilization requirements, high rise buildings and
skyscrapers are mostly built downtown in
metropolitan areas around the world, especially those
countries with great populations. Those buildings are
isolated biosphere only based on man-made lights to
maintain people’s optical activities. For example,
China consumes 25% of global architectural energy
and 13% of that energy is used to power lighting. At
present, green structures focus greatly on saving
energy with indoor thermal systems. However, in the
area of illumination fields, there is very little research
offering relevant solutions.

Introduction

Research on the intrinsic characteristics of the optical
identity in construction materials is still at its infancy.
Due to its outstanding light guiding and sensing
advantages, such as anti-electromagnetic interference
capability, small dimensions, distributed
measurement and anti-corrosion characteristics,
optical fibres have been widely adopted in the
communication and sensing fields. It is considered to
be one of the best sensor materials available and has
been used widely since the 1990s.

Aim

Today we are living in a world where energy
expenditure and environmental problems have
escalated to global scale. In today’s developed world
our built environment takes energy; energy to make
the materials that go into the buildings, energy to
construct them and energy to heat, cool & light them
Countries with great population have buildings to be
ratio higher than that of small population. Those
buildings are isolated biosphere only based on
manmade lights to maintain people's optical activities.
Our main aim is to save energy and use it in different
way.

Scope

Translucent concrete blocks can be used in many
ways and implemented into many forms and be highly
advantageous. Yet, the only drawback would be its
high cost. That doesn’t stop high class architects
from using it. It’s a great sign of attraction and artistic
evolution. Any structure with a small hint of
translucent concrete is bound to make heads turn and
make them stand in awe.

Observations, Results and Discussion
• the process of making light transmitting concrete,
In
the first step involved is preparation of mould. The
mould required for the prototype can be made with
different materials which can be of either tin or wood.
The diameter of the holes and number of holes mainly
depends on percentage of fiber used.

Perfect result and observation can be done with after

making the sample cube and various test.

Conclusion
• the process of making light transmitting concrete,
In
the first step involved is preparation of mould. The
mould required for the prototype can be made with
different materials which can be of either tin or wood.
In the mould preparation, it is important to fix the
basic dimensions of mould. Plates made of sheets
which are used in electrical switch boards is used
which will be helpful in making perforations and give
a smooth texture to the mould, holes are drilled in to
the plates .The diameter of the holes and number of
holes mainly depends on percentage of fiber used.
Transparent concrete achieves maximum effect when
used in an environment with a high degree of light
contrast, such as this illuminated table in a dimly lit
room. NAME

Small buildings are replaced by high rise buildings and sky
scrapers. This arises one of the problem in deriving
natural light in building, due to obstruction of nearby
structures. Due to this problem use of artificial sources for
illumination of building is increased by great amount. So it
is very essential to reduce the artificial light consumption
in structure.

Light transmitting concrete is one of the fibre reinforced
concrete which is used for aesthetic application by
incorporating the optical fibres in concrete. Optical fibres
are one which helps for transmission of light through fibre.
The end-lite type of fibre isused to increase the aesthetic
appearance of the concrete. The concept of light
transmitting concrete is like a transparent concrete. When
it is used in ceiling or side wall, it is exposed to direct
sun light which transmit the image but not completely
transparent.

Building energy saving and safe evaluation for engineering
structures have obtained the worldwide attention. It is
much of importance for developing a new kind of building
material, which can integrate green energy saving with
self-sensing properties of functional material. Based on
the excellent properties of light guiding and elasto -optic
effect of optical fibre, a novel smart transparent concrete
is researched by arranging the optical fibres into the
concrete.

The development of a light transmitting concrete using
plastic optical fibre (POF) is discussed and producing
which will help to reduce the consumption of electric
energy in closed environments based on the traditional
means of lighting, which can manufacture some parts of
the exterior walls of the moulds are made of concrete,
transparent and that allow the entry of the nature lighting
from outside to the inside. The experimental results show
that an optical fibre can be easily combined with concrete
and that the POF could provide a steady light transmitting
ratio. NAME
