Assessment Centres are often described as the variety of

testing techniques that allow the candidates to demonstrate,

under standardized conditions, the skills and abilities most
essential for success in a given job. ± Dennis A. Joiner,

— {ore than one assessor

— The decision to hire or promote (or train) is based on a
pooling of the information from the assessors and the
techniques.
— The overall evaluation of the candidates' behaviour
happens some time after the observation of the
candidates' performance in the exercises.
— Simulation exercises are used. The idea is to get the
candidates to demonstrate their abilities, not just talk
about them. The simulations are developed to draw out
the skills or behaviours relevant to job performance.
Ú
— All of the generalized target behaviours -
often called dimensions - have been
determined by a formal analysis of the
relevant job behaviours.
— Finally, all of the techniques used are
designed to provide information that
speaks to the previously identified
dimensions.

— ACs map the next level challenges and simulate
them in exercises

— A fair means of assessment by the participants.

— Can be customized

— Support from Line {anagers in {anagement

Decisions

— Provide training to participants in the process

— Their validity coefficient is higher than most other

techniques used for predicting performance

º èrganize the assessment process around target
dimensions
º Use behavior to predict behavior
º Have two or more individuals independently observe &
evaluate
º èrganize a discussion so two or more assessors
systematically share and debate their behavioral insights and
relate these findings to each target dimension prior to
reaching an overall decision.
º Develop a system that ensures all target dimensions are
covered and that uses inputs from multiple sources.
º Use simulations to stimulate behavior to be observed.
