Welcome to this topic on

System of Equations
System of Equations
Collection of two or more equations with the same set of
unknown variables.
  Example:
Find the variable x from the equation

Find the variable x and y from the equation

Tools used to solve the system of equations:

• Matrices
• Computer algorithms
System of Equations

In SAT, we use two methods to solve the equations:

• Substitution
• Elimination
System of Equations
Substitution: It is a method used to solve the linear system of
equations that are having one or more variables.
For example, if you have the system of two equations with
two unknowns, then you can find the solution by using the
below steps.

Step 1: Simplify the equation by expanding the parenthesis

and fractions.

Step 2: Solve any one of the equations for either variable.
System of Equations
Step 3: Substitute the equation obtained in Step (2) in the other
equation. This results in a single equation with one
unknown.

Step 4: Solve the equation obtained in Step 3 by using
elementary arithmetic operations.

Step 5: Substitute back the value obtained in Step 4 into the
equation obtained in Step 2.

Step 6: Simplify and obtain the value of the other unknown.
Example
Solve the following system of equations by substitution method

Solution: From equation (1)

Now substitute the ‘x’ value in equation (2)

Example

Substitute ‘y’ value in equation (1)

Therefore,
System of Equations

Elimination: It is the process of eliminating one of the

variables in a system of equations using addition or
subtraction in conjunction with multiplication or division
and solving the system of equations.
Example

Solve the following system of equations by elimination method

Solution:  Multiply equation (1) with 2 on both sides

Now add equation (2) and (3)

Example

Substitute the ‘x’ value in equation (1)
Word Problems

• Set up an equation with:

• Words
• Numbers

• Plugin numbers in place of words wherever

possible
Word Problems

Translating Words to Algebraic Expression:

• Look for keywords in the problem
• Increase  addition and less  subtraction
• “2 times”  multiplying a number or variable by 2
• “is”  equality in the equation
• If the question mentions finding “a number” without
specifying the value of the number, assign a variable
for that number and then solve the equation
