DESIGN OF GIRDER/ BEAM
TABULATION OF THE

1
MOMENTS FROM MDM
AND PORTAL METHOD
 Tabulate the moments at supports from the MDM (Dead Load),
MDM (Live Load) and Portal Method (Seismic Load) in every
floor level
DESIGN OF GIRDER/ BEAM

2
LOAD COMBINATION
FROM NSCP 2015
 Using the load combination for NSCP 2015, solve for the
factored moments.

1.2DL + 1.6LL

1.2DL +1.0EL+f1LL

If you have LL greater than

4.8 kPa, f1=1.0, but if your
live loads are less than 4.8
kPa, use f1=0.5

3
GOVERNING GIRDER FOR
EVERY FLOOR
 Choose the governing girder for every floor. How? Choose the
girder with moments at supports that will give the largest
moment at midspan by determining its Shear and Moment
diagram. Also, you can easily identify the governing girder just
by looking at the moments.

4
SHEAR AND MOMENT DIAGRAM FOR
EVERY GOVERNING GIRDER IN EVERY
FLOOR
 Draw the shear and moment
diagram of each governing girder in
every floor. The value of the
maximum Moment at support,
moment at midspan and the
maximum shear will be used for the
design of flexural reinforcements at
supports, flexural reinforcements at
midspan and design for stirrups,
respectively.

5
DESIGN PROPER
 Now that you have your maximum moments and maximum
shear, you can now proceed to the design proper. The
procedure for the design will not be discussed here anymore.
Students should be able to design by applying he/she learnt in
RCD.
 Design parameters must be defined first. This include fc’, fy,
preliminary dimensions, etc.
 You can use excel in the design but make sure to still provide
the formulas used.
 You can also provide the step by step solution plus the summary
using excel for checking.
 The use of excel will give you the chance to easily go back on
the start of your solution if your preliminary dimensions failed.

DESIGN OF
COLUMN
The design of column will only be due to axial load. But if you wish to
design the column due to combined axial and bending, you may do
so. The steps can also be used for the design due to combined axial
and bending.

4
COLUMN DUE TO AXIAL
LOAD
 Axial Loads are due to gravity loads, i.e. dead loads and live
loads. Here, you need to choose the column which carries the
largest dead load and live load. Therefore, you will be needing
your dead load map and live load map here. You need to design
at least 2 columns, interior and exterior column.
DESIGN OF COLUMN

5
COMPUTATION OF LOADS
 Solve for Pdl, Pll, and Pu (factored load due to gravity loads)
DESIGN OF COLUMN

5
COMPUTATION OF LOADS
 Tabulate the unfactored loads and Factored load for every floor.
DESIGN OF COLUMN

6
DESIGN PROPER
 You may design the column due to axial load only, or you may
also design the column due to combine axial and moment.
 Design parameters must be defined first. This include fc’, fy,
preliminary dimensions, etc.
 The procedures for the design will not be discussed here. The
students must be able to recall the procedures discussed in
their RCD subject.
 You may summarize your solution using excel so that if your
preliminary dimensions failed, you can easily change and go
back to the start of the design.

DESIGN OF
FOOTING
The design of footing is only due to axial loads.
DESIGN OF FOOTING

1
DESIGN PROPER
 Design parameters must be defined first. This include fc’, fy,
preliminary dimensions, etc.
 You need to design at least 2 footing.
 Using the total Pu from the column, design the footing for
external and internal footing.
 The procedures will not be discussed here. Please recall your
Foundation engineering.
