keep their buildings as simple as they can. They have not used much
ornamentation in buildings.

PROJECTS

 His major projects in Pakistan are :

 Institute of Bussiness administration , Karachi

 Dawood Center , Karachi
 Karachi American School , Karachi
 Flashman Hotel , Rawalpindi
INSTITUTE OF BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION OR IBA
 IBA is a regionally
acclamied, highly
distinguished business
administration
university in Karachi,
Pakistan
 LOCATION KU Circular Rd, Karachi
 ESTABLISHED built in 1964
 ORIENTATION South-East

Plan :
 Plan of the building is Rectangular in shape. This is a Four
storied building.

Style :
Modern Style
Concept
Just like Dawood Centre , the building concept lies in less is more ,
and the function of the building.
Form :
 Form of the building is simple. Straight façade has been used. There
is no use of different volumes or height , it is starting from base line
and going straight to the top line. We can see a large rectangular
façade in the elevation.
 Structure And Materials :
 In the Institute of Business Administration the distinction between
structural concrete and non-load-bearing brick panels is emphasized
by the insertion of glazing and timber shutters. His basic material in
all his buildings is concrete
Renovation
Program :
Now a days the
renovation of different
IBA departments is
going on. New
proposals and
techniques are being
used
ANALYSIS OF PROJECTS

DAWOOD
CENTRE
Dawood centre is
basically a plaza
which is in multi-
purpose use.
 LOCATION MT khan rd, civil lines, Saddar town, Karachi,
Sindh
 ESTABLISHED built in 1960’s
 ORIENTATION North-West

Plan :
Plan of the building is simply
Rectangular in shape. This is a
thirteen storeyed building. Different
floors are categorized for different
activities.
Form :
 Form of the building is very simple. From very far distance it just
look like having a straight façade , with small rectangular
parametric cubes placed on its walls.
 Actually these are the projections which he has provided
throughout the building. These outward projections are providing
the shade to the windows which is a good thing because these
projections are avoiding the heat of sun to come inside. In this way
the internal temperature would remain under control.
 Although there is no play of volumes and shapes but still it is
looking interesting because of the provided shades and projections.

Style :
 Modern Style
Function :
 It is fulfilling its function efficiently. William Perry has
considered the climate factor while designing the building
 It was a challenge to deal with a North-West facing building
façade. He took it as a challenge and controlled all the
façades. By providing the vertical shades he had controlled
the lower angled sun at some extent , and by horizontal
shades he has achieved the protection from higher angled
sun.
 This is the key feature of this building which is helping it out
to fulfill its function.
Concept and Structure :
 The design concept of this building lies in simplicity and
efficiency. That how he could achieve the efficiency keeping
the form simple. He had considered the human comfort and
climate of Karachi.
 The efficacy of identical sun protection for four different
orientations was doubtful and he had the advantage of
imparting a singular unity to the building.

 He had used the column beam structure in the building. He is

very strong in structure. His column beam junctions seem very
appropriate. He had used the concrete in the building façade.
His project is very famous for the Skin-Deep study in this
building.
Flashman's hotel, Rawalpindi
The Flashman's hotel
is a land mark of
Rawalpindi and the
history of the
subcontinent. The
Flashman's hotel was
used from the
English times and
has hosted some of
the greatest decision
makers of the sub
continent.
 LOCATION near Saddar bazaar and is only 20-minutes drive
from Islamabad International Airport
 ESTABLISHED built in 1964
 ORIENTATION South-East
Plan :
 Plan of the building is almost Squarish in shape. This is a double
storied building

Style :
 Modern

Form :
 Building form is quite simple. And façade is straight . Front
façade has windows and Doors. But the doors are not prominent.
There is no form variation . There should be such elements which
could break this impact and make it more interesting.
Structure And Materials :

 The basic material in building is concrete. Column Beam

structure had been used. Graffito had been used on the Walls which
is giving a natural finish to the façade. Glass doors and Glass
windows had been used.
 Skin brown color has been used with brown color border lining.
Kamil Khan Mumtaz Said….In
“Architecture In Pakistan”.
On the other hand, architects such as William Perry, who lived and worked in
Pakistan in the 1960’s have produced worthwhile buildings. Even if Perry’s work is
mannered, it is mannerism of a very high order. If his detailing of beams and column
junctions seems more appropriate to timber construction than to reinforced
concrete, his exploitation of such devices as a means for articulation of the
structural system is consistent. And if the efficacy of identical sun protection for
four different orientations is doubtful it does have the advantage of imparting a
singular unity to the building.
But the architecture of William Perry is not always as skin-deep as may be
suggested by the pattern of his Dawood Centre facades. In the Institute of Business
Administration the distinction between structural concrete and non-load-bearing
brick panels is emphasized by the insertion of glazing and timber shutters, while in
the Karachi American School it is a bold simplicity of expression which reflects the
simpler structural arrangement of load-bearing walls and concrete beams. Perhaps
the greatest success of both these buildings lies in the sustained internal and
external unity of character which one experiences in walking through and around
them.
CONCLUSION
 While analyzing William Perry’s projects, some common
features in his buildings are noticed .
 focused on simplicity.
 He did not use the volume variation in his buildings.
 He had a full command on structure of buildings and was well
known for the use of concrete as basic material. He mostly used the
column beam structure in the buildings.
 He had considered the climatic conditions in his buildings. He had
provided shades and projections in his buildings, by special
considering the Sun.
 He preferred to the function and simplicity.
 He had not used ornamentation in his buildings.
 He used the Pakistan’s traditional elements in his buildings.
