Challenges with Safety Programs
• Funding ($$$)
• Time
• Regulation(s) changing
• Buy-in (attitudes)
• Monotonous & Boring
• Inconsistent
Funding ($)
Pay now or pay dearly later!

• AB 1127 repeals current prohibition on civil

penalties against governmental agencies for
safety violations
• Increased Fines for: knowingly, repeating,
and willful negligence
• SB 198 “Be a manager go to jail”
• Workers comp & litigation
Funding (cont.)
Allocate resources for:
• Safety position (be creative)
• Personal protective equipment (feedback)
• Technical Safety Gadgets (sniffer)
• New videos (humorous)
• Strong Safety Committee
• Action on hazards
• Budget cautiously ( watch out for consultants)
No Time for Safety
Untrained + unskilled workers = lost time accidents

• Escorting employees to medical assistance

• Accident Investigations
• Filling out accident reports
• FAT / CAT OSHA Inspections
• Litigations court appearances
• Lost time from employee not at work
• More work for everyone else
Make Time
for Safety

• Dedicated Safety Position (it’s my job)

• Active Safety Committee (inspections)
• Reduced accidents means more healthy
workers to gain time back
• Time passes by anyway might as well have
spent it on something worthwhile

Changing Regulations
• Anticipating changes
• Hard to keep up with them
(interpretation)
• Priorities get rearranged
• Putting out little fires
• Not communicated well
(publications)
Safety can be boring if:
• You’ve seen the same videos 100 times
• Same handouts over and over
• Same monotone speaker or presenter
• Can be viewed as a “Waste of Time”
• Let’s get it over with and be done with it
(like an immunization shot)
Buy-in &Attitudes
• Sell-It (promote the program)
• Involve employees in program (surveys)
• Education – Engineering – Enforcement
• Positive reinforcement
• Celebrate safety
