What Are Plastic and Where Do they
Come from?
Plastic is a word that originally meant “pliable and easily shaped.” It
only recently became a name for a category of materials called
polymers. The word polymer means “of many parts,” and polymers are
made of long chains of molecules. Polymers abound in nature. Cellulose,
the material that makes up the cell walls of plants, is a very common
natural polymer
The First Synthetic Plastic
The first synthetic polymer was invented in 1869 by John
Wesley Hyatt, who was inspired by a New York firm’s offer of
$10,000 for anyone who could provide a substitute for ivory.
The growing popularity of billiards had put a strain on the
supply of natural ivory, obtained through the slaughter of wild
elephants. By treating cellulose, derived from cotton fiber,
with camphor, Hyatt discovered a plastic that could be crafted
into a variety of shapes and made to imitate natural substances
like tortoiseshell, horn, linen, and ivory.

What is The Polymer?
Polymers are materials made of long, repeating chains of molecules. The materials have unique properties,
depending on the type of molecules being bonded and how they are bonded. Some polymers bend and
stretch, like rubber and polyester. Others are hard and tough, like epoxies and glass.
Beberapa
polimer menekuk dan meregangkan, seperti karet dan poliester. Lainnya keras dan tangguh, seperti
epoxies dan kaca.
Polymers touch almost every aspect of modern life. Chances are most people have been in contact with at
least one polymer-containing product — from water bottles to gadgets to tires.
Polimer menyentuh hampir setiap aspek kehidupan modern.
hingga ban.
The term polymer is often used to describe plastics, which are synthetic polymers. However, natural
polymers also exist; rubber and wood, for example, are natural polymers that consist of a simple
hydrocarbon, isoprene, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Proteins are natural polymers made up of
amino acids, and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) are polymers of nucleotides — complex molecules composed
of nitrogen-containing bases, sugars and phosphoric acid, for example.
sederhana, isoprena, menurut Encyclopedia Britannica.
Chemical Reaction Of Polymer
Polymerization is the method of creating synthetic polymers by combining
smaller molecules, called monomers, into a chain held together by covalent
bonds, according to ThoughtCo., an online educational resource. Various
chemical reactions — those caused by heat and pressure, for example — alter
the chemical bonds that hold monomers together, according to Scientific
American. The process causes the molecules to bond in a linear, branched or
network structure, resulting in polymers.
menurut Scientific American. Proses ini menyebabkan molekul berikatan dalam
struktur linear, bercabang atau jaringan, menghasilkan polimer.
These chains of monomers are also called macromolecules. Most polymer
chains have a string of carbon atoms as a backbone. A single macromolecule
can consist of hundred of thousands of monomers, according to the Polymer
Science Learning Center.
Rantai monomer ini juga disebut makromolekul. Sebagian besar rantai polimer
memiliki untaian atom karbon sebagai tulang punggung. Makromolekul tunggal
Polimer.
Uses Of Polymer
Polymers are used in almost every area of modern living. Grocery bags,
soda and water bottles, textile fibers, phones, computers, food
packaging, auto parts, and toys all contain polymers.
Polimer digunakan di hampir setiap bidang kehidupan modern. Tas
belanjaan, botol soda dan air, serat tekstil, telepon, komputer, kemasan
makanan, suku cadang mobil, dan mainan semuanya mengandung polimer.
Even more-sophisticated technology uses polymers. For example, "the
membranes for water desalination, carriers used in controlled drug
release and biopolymers for tissue engineering all use polymers,"
according to the ACS.
Popular polymers for manufacturing include polyethylene and
polypropylene. Their molecules can consist of 10,000 to 200,000
monomers.
polipropilen. Molekul mereka dapat terdiri dari 10.000 hingga 200.000
monomer.

What Is Polypropylene?
Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic “addition polymer” made from the
combination of propylene monomers. It is used in a variety of applications
to include packaging for consumer products, plastic parts for various
industries including the automotive industry, special devices like Living
hinges, and textiles. Polypropylene was first polymerized in 1951 by a pair
of Phillips petroleum scientists named Paul Hogan and Robert Banks and
later by Italian and German scientists Natta and Rehn.
kombinasi monomer propilena. Ini digunakan dalam berbagai aplikasi untuk
kemasan produk konsumen, komponen plastik untuk berbagai industri
termasuk industri otomotif, perangkat khusus seperti engsel hidup, dan
tekstil.
What Are Characteristic of PolyPropylene?
The density of (PP) is between 0.895 and 0.92 g/cm³
Massa Jenis (PP) antara 0.895 dan 0.92 g/cm³
The Young’s modulus of PP is between 1300 and 1800 N/mm².
Modulus Young berkisar antara 1300 s/d 1800 N/mm²
Melting Point around 130 °C (266 °F) - 171 °C (340 °F)
Titik Leleh berkisar 130 °C (266 °F) - 171 °C (340 °F)
Chemical Resistance: Diluted bases and acids don’t react readily with polypropylene, which makes it a
good choice for containers of such liquids, such as cleaning agents, first-aid products, and more.
Elasticity and Toughness: Polypropylene will act with elasticity over a certain range of deflection (like
all materials), but it will also experience plastic deformation early on in the deformation process, so it is
generally considered a "tough" material. Toughness is an engineering term which is defined as a material's
ability to deform (plastically, not elastically) without breaking.
Fatigue Resistance: Polypropylene retains its shape after a lot of torsion, bending,
and/or flexing. This property is especially valuable for making living hinges.
Ketahanan Kelelahan: Polypropylene mempertahankan bentuknya setelah banyak
puntir, lentur, dan / atau melentur. Properti ini sangat berharga untuk membuat engsel
hidup.
Insulation: polypropylene has a very high resistance to electricity and is very useful for
electronic components.
Transmissivity: Although Polypropylene can be made transparent, it is normally
produced to be naturally opaque in color. Polypropylene can be used for applications
where some transfer of light is important or where it is of aesthetic value. If high
transmissivity is desired then plastics like Acrylic or Polycarbonate are better choices.
