What is a Verb?
• A verb is a word that expresses an
action or state of being.
• A verb takes an action into a subject.
• Verbs are used as imperatives.
• There are two kinds of verbs : the
Main Verb and the Helping Verb.
What are Main Verbs?
• A main verb is a verb in main clause.
• The main verb is the action word of
the main clause that the subject
completes.
• Main verbs (or lexical verbs) are the
actions words in a sentence
(main/independent clause).
What are Main Verbs?
Examples :
1. I wash my hands.
2. The man quenched the fire.
3. People enjoy music.
4. He pressed the wrong button.
What are Helping Verbs?
• A helping verb always help either an
action word or a linking verb.
• A helping verb is also known as
auxiliary verb.
• They can also add detail to how time
is conveyed in a sentence.
What are Helping Verbs?
Helping Verbs are not
Main Verbs
• Main verbs complete action alone. That
is, they do not require additional verbs to
communicate action.
• Helping verbs cannot stand alone. They
need to be paired with main verbs in
order to communicate action. Helping
verb change verb tense and meaning.
NOTE: many verbs on the linking verb list
can also function as action verbs.
Examples :
• I will play the piano.
(will – helping verb, play – main verb)
• I will be a teacher.
(will – helping verb, be – linking verb)
• I have a cat.
(have – main verb, linking verb)
• I am a teacher.
(am – main verb, linking verb)
SUMMARY :
• Main verbs (or lexical verbs) are the
actions words in a sentence
(main/independent clause).
• Helping verbs cannot stand alone. They
need to be paired with main verbs in order to
communicate action.
• Some verbs can be function as main verbs or
