NEO-CLASSICISM
ARCHITECTURE
• Neoclassical architecture is an architectural style that began in the mid-
18th century,
• Neoclassical, or "new" classical, architecture describes buildings that are
inspired by the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome.
• Neoclassical architecture was a reaction to Rococo and Baroque
architectural styles.
• Columns were used to carry the weight of the building's structure. But
later they became used as a graphical element
characteristics

• Free standing columns

• Massive buildings
• Building's facade is flat and long. Often having a screen of
free-standing columns
• Symmetrical shape
• Tall columns that rise the full height of the building
• Triangular pediment
• Domed roof
Difference between
rococo and baroque
•The Rococo style is usually considered a late development in Baroque design.
•Baroque architecture was ornate and heavily ornamented, while Rococo
architecture tends to be much lighter in effect - though no less elaborate and
encrusted with ornamentation.
•While there are many similarities between the Baroque and the Rococo styles,
Rococo buildings tend to be ‘softer’ and less ‘heavy’ in visual effect, more graceful
overall than Baroque buildings. Colors are pale and curving, organic shapes
dominate.
BAROQUE ROCOCO
