Learning Outcome
At the end of this session,
The viewers will be able to Design a Beam subjected
to Torsion.

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 2

Example
Design the reinforcement required for a rectangular beam
section with following data
Size of beam = 300mm x 600mm
Grade of concrete = M20
Grade of steel = Fe 415
Factored shear force = Vu = 95 kN
Factored torsional moment = Tu = 45 kN-m
Factored bending moment = Mu = 115 kN-m
Sketch the reinforcement details.

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 3

Solution :
•
Step 1 : Find equivalent BM (Mel )and equivalent SF (Vel)
Assuming 50mm effective cover,
Effective depth (d) = 600-50 = 550 mm
As per IS :456:2000…..cl. No.41.4.2
Mt = = 45
= 79.41 kN-m
Mt  Mu. Hence no need to provide steel on compression side.

Mel = Mu + Mt = 115 + 79.41 = 194.41 kN-m

As per IS :456:2000…..cl. No.41.3.1

Vel = Vu + 1.6 = 335 kNWalchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 4

Step 2 : Design of longitudinal reinforcement :
Xulim = 0.48 d = 0.48 x 550 = 264 mm

Mulim = 0.36 fck b Xulim ( d – 0.42 Xulim)

= 0.36 x 20 x 300 x 264 (550-0.42x 264)

= 250.40 x 106 N-mm = 250.4 kN-m

Mel  Mulim. Hence singly reinforced section can designed.

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 5

\ As per IS456:2000 cl. no G.1.1 b the tensile reinforcement
•
(Ast) is given by,

Mel = 0.87 fy Ast d

194.41 x 106 = 0.87 x 415 Ast x 550 x

979.013 = Ast

Ast2 – 7951.807 Ast + 979.013 x 7951.807 = 0

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 6

•Ast =
Ast = 1144 mm2

Provide 4 bars of 20mm diameter.

Ast provided = 4 x x 202 = 1256 mm2

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 7

•Step  3 : Design of Shear reinforcement :
el= = 2.03 N/mm2

pt = percentage steel provided= x 100 =0.76

From table 19 of IS 456,

c = 0.56 N/mm2

From table 20 of IS 456,

cmax =2.8 N/mm2

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 8
Thus c  v  cmax
Hence, shear reinforcement is to be provided.
As per IS: 456 : cl.no 40.4

Vus = Vel - c b d
= 335 x 1000 – 0.56 x 300 x 550
= 242600 kN

•
Selecting 2 legged 8mm HYSD bars for shear
reinforcement.
Vus = as per IS 456:2000 Cl.40.4 a)
Vus =
 Sv = 82.29 mm.

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 9

Spacing is too close, creating problems in concreting.
Hence provide 4 legged stirrups at 160 mm( 2 x 89.29)
centre to centre.

Check for minimum shear reinforcement. Assuming 50mm side cover. As
per IS 456:2000 cl.no 41.4.3
b1 = 300 – 100 = 200 mm

d1= 600 – 100 = 500 mm

Asv minimum = +
= +
= 233 mm2

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 10

The expression for minimum shear reinforcement

as per IS:456:2000 is given by

1. +
2. +
3. +
4. +

•
Asv provided = 4 x x 82 = 201 mm2  Asv reqd.

Reduce the spacing to 150 mm. Then

Asv minimum = 233 x = 194 mm  Asv provided.

The maximum spacing provided as per cl.26.5.1.7 a)

x1 = 200 + 8 = 208 mm , y1 = 500+8 = 508mm

= = 179 mm. Or 300mm whichever is less

By selecting Sv = 150 mm this requirement is also satisfied. Hence 2 legged 8 mm stirrups

at 150 mm c/c is satisfactory.

Walchand Institute of Technology, Solapur 13

•Step
  4 : Side face reinforcement :
As per cl.26.5.1.7 a) d1  450 mm. Hence side face reinforcement
is required, as per cl.26.5.1.3
0.1 % of web area = = 180 mm2

Reinforcement required on each face = = 90 mm 2

Hence provide 1 bar of 12 mm on each face as shown in Fig.

Area provided = x 122 = 113 mm2
