CHAPTER-1

OUR RESOURCES
Is this sounds like a new term?
Or
Do we often use this term in our statements?
Certainly yes, we do use this term in our day to day lives.
But still sometimes we are unable to define the word properly .
What is resource?
LE T’ S UNDERSTAND THI S WI TH THE HE LP OF
EXAMP L ES .
1.Does this piece of plastic has any use?

But if this piece of plastic is moulded into a product like

small plastic packets/ tumbler/bangle/pen or a pen cap then?

Are these items useful for you now?

2. Pile of waste papers

Seems no use as of now?

But if moulded into decorative items or carry bags then??

Seems to have use- YES

3. The log of tree has no use for a time being

But if moulded into pencil, furniture or for fire camp purpose then?
4.The rotten leaves /fruit and vegetable peels seems no use

Can you think of its use?

Certainly for making manure.

GUESS THE RESOURCE IT IS MADE UP OF
Any guesses which material or resource has been used in making potteries?

Ans.clay, sand, silt etc

So the examples discussed above themselves reflect the definition of resource.

Let’s see how?
DEFINITION OF RESOURCE

• Resource means things available for use.

• The things that are used by people to satisfy their different purposes.

• The available things carry or have economical value (Rs./$) with them that
makes it more important. For example:- (Turn to next slide).
1. Plastic made things= small plastic packet+pens+tumbler etc.

Usage and satisfaction of different purposes:- for keeping different things'

writing
Economical value: plastic packets be Rs.10, pens for Rs.40,
tumbler:-for Rs.200
Thus fulfilling definition of resources.

2. Pile of waste papers= carry bags, gift wrapper etc

Usage and different purposes:- to get things out of market we use paper bags,
to wrap a gift etc.
Economical value:- maximum Rs. 5
As you must have seen branded outlets charge money for carry bags.
Thus fulfilling all the three conditions of resources.

In the same way with log of tree and other examples

CLASSIFICATION OF RESOURCES

NATURAL RESOURCES HUMAN MADE RESOURCES

HUMAN RESOURCES
Further divided into

Development and use Divided into actual and potential resources

Origin Divided into biotic and abiotic resources
Stock Divided into renewable and non renewable resources
Distribution Divided into ubiquitous and localised resources

Lets discuss one by one

Development and use

• This means that what all resources have been already developed and are
in use by people presently. Also there are resources that has been
developed but are not in use by people at present.
• So the resources that are developed and are currently in use by people are
called actual resources. We even know the exact quantity of some
resources available for use.For example:- COAL found in India

Approx quantity:-301.56 billion tonnes

55% is used for commercial energy
75% for power generation

So the source has been developed plus

we know the exact quantity and is currently in use by people for
different purposes. Thus fulfilling the requirements of actual resource.
WATER
Suppose availability of water on Earth- 1.386billion cubic km or 1.3L
Out of which 97.5% is salty water, 2.5% being fresh water
out of this 0.3% is in liquid form.
So we know the approx quantity plus we are using it currently
Thus fulfilling requirement of actual resource.

POTENTIAL RESOURCES

As the name suggests resources that have the potential to be developed

It means the resource has been identified but is not in use on large scale.
For example Uranium found in Ladakh.

It is present in region
but we are not able to extract it out in an economical way or at low cost.
• Remember one thing potential resources can become actual resources
after a period of time. For example years ago we don’t had an idea about
how to make use of high wind speeds or running water but today we are
using high speed winds in wind farms and high speed running water in
generating hydroelectricity.
On the basis of origin

• Biotic Resources- Bio means life. Life exists in plants, animals, human
beings. So this means the resources that we obtain from above mentioned
living organisms. Now think about it how we are a resource or plants are
resource animals are resource?? What we are using to satisfy our different
purposes and also carries economical value?

• Plants gives us fruits, flowers, vegetables that for sure serve as our
appetite purpose and we get them from markets at different rates.
• Animals give us milk, wool, meat so this again serve our appetite as well
as winter protection purpose and we purchase it at different rates.

• Humans- they are a source of knowledge plus they create resources, they
know how to use resources.

• So the resources that are created and utilised by life.

ABIOTIC RESOURCES

• Abiotic is opposite of biotic or life. This acts as a support system for biotic
resources. If abiotic will not be there then biotic resources can not be
developed at any cost.

• Air, water, sunlight, land, minerals, petrol etc are examples of abiotic
resources. No life can sustain without them.

• Abiotic resources acts as a support system for biotic resources.

ON THE BASIS OF STOCK

• Renewable Resources- The resources that can be regenerated (means revive

or grow). We can use air, water, solar energy, plants, animals, human beings.

• Non Renewable Resources- The resources that can not be regenerated

frequently or fastly. To develop such resources we need to make ample use of
technology, money, patience and time if once finished.Like- petrol, coal and
other minerals.
ON THE BASIS OF DISTRIBUTION

• The resources are distributed on the basis of location as well

• Ubiquitous Resources- resources that are found everywhere no matter

wherever you live for example- air, water, sunlight etc.

• Localised Resources- resources that are found only at some places for
example- gold, diamond, silver etc.
SOME OTHER RESOURCES

• Agricultural resources

• Pastoral Resources

• Energy Resources

• Mineral Resources

We attach different values to the resources- Economic (in monetary terms),

Aesthetic (that brings calmness to human beings like sight seeing,
Legal- something that is very important as resource.
Conservation of resources

• Excessive and improper utilisation of any resource can bring harms to us.

• Be it renewable resources- we will not be able to revive them.So with this

comes the concept of conservation of resources

• We need to adopt the concept of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.
