INTRODUCTION
The topic of alternative fuel vehicles is
especially relevant given the events of the
last few weeks.

Polluting fuels.

Effective source of
energy.
QUICK FACTS
COMPONENTS OF FCVs
 FUEL CELL STACK :

Fuel cells are similar to

Evs.

Many different types of fuel

cells, most common will
likely be the PEM .

Hydrogen and oxygen in,

water vapor and liquid
water out.

Typical output is about

0.8 volts.
COMPONENTS OF FCVs

Hydrogen storage
tank.

Electric motor and

power control unit.

 Battery.
Fuel Cell Vehicles
Being pushed by car companies themselves

 FCVs are more energy efficient than gasoline-powered

vehicles.

 A fuel cell uses about 40 to 60 percent of the available

energy in hydrogen.

 Internal combustion engines use only about 20 percent of

the energy available in gasoline.

 Also Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, BMW others have FCV

prototypes on the road
The FCX project by Honda

The big advantage

over plug-in electric
vehicles is range

The FCX will do

around 270 miles
(435 km) on a four-
kilo tank of hydrogen!

Honda FCX Clarity

Alternative Fuel Vehicles

BMW has broken several

speed records for hydrogen
cars .
EFFICIENCY VS RANG
GRAPH
Environment
Why we are pursuing Hydrogen FCVs(?)

Low lifecycle GHG

emission compare to
conventional vehicle.
No tailpipe pollutants.
Emission free.
Hydrogen !! Where from?

H2
Hydrogen Sources
Hydrogen Production
processes:
Natural gas

Electrolysis

High Temperature Thermo-chemical Water-

Splitting

Photobiological and Photoelectrochemical

COST
Overall vehicle costs.
The lowest production costs for FCV with
80 kW system with 50000 system in year.
Hydrogen storage cost
The NAS estimated the cost of FCV
vehicle should be $39000 per vehicle.
HYDROGEN DISTRIBUTION
There is no infrastructure for distributing
hydrogen like that for fossil fuel.
Different modes of transportation – truck,
railcar, ship, or barge.
Building network of pipelines and filling
stations for FCVs would require high initial
capital costs
OBSTACLES
Fuel cell technology.
Hydrogen storage.
Hydrogen production.
Hydrogen distribution.
Vehicle cost.
Safety and public acceptance.
ADVANTAGES
High energy efficiency.

No harmful emission so Eco-friendly.

Renewable.

Readily available.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Issues
Storage is complicated.
Limited range.
Expensive fuel.
Energy carrier, not
energy source
Infrastructure.
Safety problem.
Applications of Fuel Cell
Technology
Cars
Buses
Space Travel & Exploration
Airplanes
Submarines
Off-grid Power Supply
Combined Heat & Power
So Where Are We At?
Hydrogen is only type of energy that can provide
a wholesale substitute for foreign oil within a
decade.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology with focus on

performance, durability, price.

safety about operation and maintenance.
