Impact of social media

on youth of universities

Introduction
Social media
Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and
sharing of information , ideas, career interests and other forms of expression
via virtual communities  and networks
Social media refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or
exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks
“Social” – refers to instinctual needs humans have to connect with other humans
Media” – what we use to make connections with other humans
“Social Media” – Media used for social interaction

most of the powerful used of Social media are for businesses and social entrepreneurship
whereas most of the people these days are sharing information which is very informative and
effective if used at right places such as universities and colleges as students have to prepare
assignments and projects; social media as a flow of information floating every second.
Social media trends in pakistan
Social media has been gaining vast popularity among the masses in Pakistan mainly
due to Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Instagram etc.
The introduction of mobile broadband coupled with the influx of affordable
smartphones had a effect on the use of social media in Pakistan
People turn towards social media to voice their opinions, experiences, suggestions
and feedback on any topic or constituent of the society.
Problem statement

To evaluate effect of Social Media on university students academic and social life
Research objectives

This thesis aims at finding out the effect of these social media on the youth of
universities and identifying whether the impact is positive or negative by
exploring different variables.
Hypothesis
H01: Social Media networks has not provided platform for easy communication
and knowledge sharing for youth in universities.
Ha1: Social Media networks has provided platform for easy communication and
knowledge sharing for youth in universities.
H02: Students are getting distracted by the use of Social Media in their routines.
Ha2: Students are not getting distracted by the use of Social Media in their
routines.
Literature review
Haq & Chand (2012) investigated the usage rate of Social media networks such as
Facebook twitter and Instagram of students in university. The data was collected
through different questioners and surveys spread to different departments of
university whereas students on street to who are engaged in social applications on
smartphone. The collected respondents were 384 and the equal number of male and
female students was sampled. The idea was to analyses the usage frequency of
students of social media in daily routine and its impact on their academic scores. The
study resulted that Facebook has adverse effects on their academic performance
Junco (2012) analyzed the performance of academics dependent on usage of
information shared on social media, the aim of the research was to analyses the
students how they use the information floated on social media in their academics.
The data was collected from the department of university where 188 respondents
were gathered into a sample group. The results show that they don’t have any direct
effect on the academic performance of students where there is a increase in better
information assignments but they don’t directly affect the studies.
Hamat, et al., (2012) focused on the usage of social networks by post graduate
students of different universities looking for jobs and information online; the data
collection was made primary by students of different departments of university and
concluded with quantitative analysis of relation between jobs and social media. The
researcher concludes that there is a positive relation between jobs or employment and
social media; social media is filled with information and if right people are in your
friendliest there are a lot of chances of getting employed comparatively with other
post graduate students.
Methodology:
Research is based on quantitative approach
primary data collected through questionnaire from students of different departments in different universities
of Hyderabad
The survey questions helped to analyze hypothesis and objectives given below:

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study has focused on collecting information on the basis of hypothesis and
observation regarding the topic of dissertation that Social media has an impact on
youth of universities
 The research aims at identifying impacts social media has on university students.
The research design is based on 140 student responds that filled up online and offline
survey.

Finding and data analysis

The findings and analysis are created through summing up answers of the
questions given in the questionnaire by the 140 respondents. The data analysis
and findings are presented through frequency tables and figures.

The objective of the table 4.2 is to represent that most of the Szabist student were found to be using
Social media in their daily routine in comparison to Mehran university students as the table has
reflected that 70 percent which is 98 students from Szabist were more interested in responding the
survey.

The table 4.3 concludes that most of the social media users are of age 19-25; as it’s the
cumulative average of 70 percent respondents.

The table 4.4 also concludes that it was 112 respondents out of 140 who are more
indulged in using social media in their daily routine while 20 percent respondents
didn’t used social media.

we have identified that most of the respondents which are 40 percent have been using social
media for last 3 years and more while 30 percent said they have been using social media
network for 5 and more years which makes an average of 70 percent people or students
using social media for past 4 plus years.

This concludes that youth is more into using the social media network in their daily routine as the major
percent of 50-60 reflects the high usage of networks.
Key factors for using social media

our objective was to identify the key factors or variables for what youth uses
the social media in their university time span as to identify the positive or
negative impact

concludes that 40 percent students use social media to be updated with current affairs and
notifications or updates whereas 30 percent students use social media network for socializing
remaining 30 percent average students use social media network for information and study
purpose. This does show that a chunk of youth uses social media but it also reflects that only 30
percent of it uses for study or information

This also concludes with descriptive answers which show that using type of social media is what to be
concerned about; if they are using for just socializing and using for wrong use it is going to have a
negative impact on the routine.

The major chunk of 75 percent students said yes they used information that they find on social
networks while other 25 percent students were not sure if they could use that or they have used the
information. It shows that most of the students do use information from the social media source;
hence it’s a positive thing that social media is not wasting the information.

The table 4.10 concludes that half of the students are actually friends with their teachers on
social network and other either have not added.

Hence it concludes that teachers and students do communicate on social network sites; where it can
be a positive sign that there is frank society on the social media network.

The tale concludes that most of the parents are unaware of the social activities of their children and an
average percent of respondents have shared their information with parents about social activities.

conclusion
The purpose of the dissertation or research was to conduct an analysis on how our
youth is indulged in use of social media while being in universities and does this
activity have a positive impact in their routine life
The data was collected through online and offline method, Google docs survey tool
and offline printed questioner were distributed in SZABIST Hyderabad campus and
online surveyed at Mehran university. the total data was collected and a sample size
of 140 was created
Hence the dissertation concludes that there is a greater chances of Youth getting active and
scoring if they use of social media is made more proper as it has a provided a great platform for
communication and information sharing.
Hence the Ha1: is approved as most of the respondents agreed to the positive and efficient use of
social media networks in their daily routine of university and normal routine of life.
On the other hand it has also concluded that students on the social network have teachers as
friends and their parents acknowledge their activities, the students are not distracted through
social media yet are having a positive and effective use of the platform and source; hence the H a2:
is also approved.
 
Recommendation
Recommendations for the students who would read this dissertation or use for
any purpose; the recommendations are:
The students must use the social media with more potential as its filled with more
knowledge
Socializing more can lead to greater PR and better social circle which also leads to
a good career in near future
Students should join channels and groups on social networking sites where they
have subject related topics
More of the students should interact with their teachers on social networks to create
better bonding.
Students should decrease their time span of using social media network to 4-6 hours
per day from 9 hours or 10.
